I tried Androgel because I didn't want to use needle at first. However, the cost was outrageous with my insurance. The shot is so much cheaper. You get used to doing it yourself eventually. I inject on the side of my thigh, switching side each week. I tried my ass and it was too difficult to do it by myself and it was so painful that I almost want to vomit. I recommend doing the injection because it is cheaper and also you don't have to worry about the gel transferring to young children or female, which will affect them negatively.
