jizzpig Posted March 4, 2014 Report Share Posted March 4, 2014 I talked to my doctor and convinced her to start me on PreP. It was an easy discussion -- no questions really. Unfortunately, she didn't seem to be well versed or familiar with it. She had to run out of the exam room to look up the prescribing details. 15 minutes later, she hands me a script and a form requesting about 15 blood tests. Hope it's as easy for me to get on it! bypassing the questions is really easy, Just say your partner is HIV+, and you want to go on PrEP as an extra layer of protection. While the doctor was asking me the regular questions and verifying my current medications (allergy and Cialis), I just said, "I'd also like to ask to be given Truvada as pre-exposure prophylaxis and reduce the risk of getting HIV." She looked at me curiously, tilted her head, and said, "I've not heard of this. Truvada is for treating those already with HIV? We usually have a specialist to manage HIV treatment." I told her that there "was an FDA approved use of Truvada for HIV negative individuals to help keep them from being infected, if they may be in situations where they would be exposed to the virus." This was the point where she excused herself from the examination room and researched PrEP and Truvada. 15 minutes later she returns saying, "WOW!! The data is impressive with at least a 44% reduction in risk. I see no reason to keep you from it if you think you are at risk. Let's run some blood work first to make sure you it's okay for you."
