Gay Sauna Thermos In Amsterdam Declared Bankrupt

The famous gay sauna (bathhouse) at the Raamstraat in Amsterdam has been declared bankrupt so was announced today. The owner blames it on competition (probably from the newer sauna Nieuwezijds gay sauna at the Nieuwezijds Armsteeg) and internet dating. He hopes someone will take over the place and make a restart. The sauna, which was famous all around the world, was started in 1966 by a (straight) couple. It was taken over by the current owner who is gay, 73yo Jan Kuipers, in 1995.

 

 

I have never been to this sauna but I have been many times at it's sister BH Thermos Night at the Kerkstraat which burned down in 2010. That was a horny place with a pitch dark darkroom. I would go and stay there until the place closed at 6am and then take the train home (drunk and poppered up to my eyeballs :-)

 

I publish this in General Discussion as opposed to Regional/Europe as many in the US and other countries may have been there and not so much follow the European section.

FUCK!  So many things have gone away in Amsterdam! Drakes Guesthouse,Black Tulip, StableMaster...I heard Dirty Dicks and Eagle  were shuttered after the owner died in the US ( but at least one has reopened??) I hope Berlin isn't sucking all the life out of  the other great sex cities of Europe--- we could lose so much if that happens and then one day the Berlin political  environment  goes conservative

I visited this place in 2011 and it was shiteful not a single soul was getting it on in there(there was approx 20 guys in there though just checking themselves out etc, boring as not being fucked so after about 2.5hours l left cock in hand.

Thermos night used to be GREAT, This one that was open daytimes & at best was always rubbish, so it's no wonder they went bankrupt - a lot of hustlers always in there too.

This issue was brought up once before- and I think  the answer is to have special discounts-- maybe during  specific hours- but to lure in the younger guys ( who may very well be living from  paycheck to paycheck) .A deal along the lines of from 3 till 5 pm, or from 1 to 3 AM, or days 10am till 4pm-- do something along the lines of having a  standard,peak rate that you  base discounts on, then charge a percentage of the peak rate based on age- a 20  year old will pay 20% of the peak rate, a 70 year old will pay 70%-- EVERYONE gets a break, but in theory the   guy who is  just starting out and may be hard pressed for  cash gets a bigger break, but is a bigger draw  crowd wise . Not to slam older guys ( fuck- I realized some time ago I have become one of them) but when I go  to the tubs, I am not lured by the  70 yr old  overweight man who  wants to ask 20 questions  as I am getting fisted by someone else. Now, toss  the 24 year old in  and I might be eager to explain and show him myself how to do it, - A side variation would be  to use  the persons actual  age as the percentage of the standard rate they get charged--a 19 yr old would pay 19% of a $32 room or $6.08-- any bath house owner  interested in trying this experiment??

The place is looking very dated and needs a complete makeover - which might be prohibitively expensive. I was there on New Year's Eve. There wasn't much going on until half an hour before closing time, then everyone went upstairs and it got fairly lively. Sucked off some hot guys.

Dirty Dicks and Eagle have been reopened since the fire and renovation. Both going strong for a couple of years now! The problem with businesses closing isn't always due to dating apps or other cities. It's simple economics: 'if people don't buy your product, there might be something wrong with your product'. If businesses want to survive, management has to be willing to make investments, if not...then businesses close.

I disagree with some of this. I was in Amsterdam last year and though I felt Thermos had a lot of sexual heat, nothing much was happening, unless you were hot and built and then they all followed each other around ...and did nothing.

The other sauna in Amsterdam is Sauna Nieuwezuds, which is very new and very high tech and full of hot guys all looking for a hotter one.

Another sauna Damrak I have not been too.

Where I disagree is that in Spartacus for instance, they say most saunas are not in Amsterdam.

I also found the bars in Amsterdam with the upstairs area,were an amazing revelation.

In short, for me Amsterdam lived up to its sex reputation.

The problem of saunas at the moment I think are there are two types, ones that smell of sex and ones that look like the guys there are on a catwalk and previewing the latest summer fashion and are not there for sex.

I used to go there regularly about a decade ago, back in those days it was blooming. Always busy, especially the Sunday afternoons.. Had quite some fun and threesomes there and I know quite a lot of guys ended up poz when opening up their ass while drunk or stoned (they charged for condoms). The problem is they never invested and thought that a name alone would be enough..

The new sauna on Nieuwezijds looks amazing, even though it's a lot smaller. Condoms are for free but it's not difficult to score bare if you want, especially in the sling and on the bunk in the darkroom. Enough eye candy, and all ages, even on the 'No towel Tuesday'. There are always some guys with an attitude, but if you are relexed and respectful, so are most the others. I've only been there a few times, but always was easy to have fun.
