Considering Prep

So I am seriously considering starting Prep. I think it's better to start sooner then later.

 

I am still waiting to be transferred to a prep friendly doc in NYC but was wondering how long does it usually take from the moment you first discuss it with the doctor, between all of the testing... until you are ready and relatively safer to take hot loads of cum up your hungry hole ?

OK, so I'm on PreP. I figure I can always go off it, plus I find a lot more hookups are available to me 'cause poz guys will bareback me. To answer your question, my primary care physician immediately referred me to an infectious diseases specialist when I told him I wanted to be on PreP. I had an appointment within 3 days, blood work was ordered, tests came back negative, Truvada was prescribed same day tests came back, I picked up my prescription the following day. All told, eight days went by before I had a bottle of pills in hand; plus, of course, seven days to achieve clinically significant levels of the drugs in my bloodstream. Call it two weeks and a day from requesting PreP to feeling safe about barebacking, No side effects other mild dehydration at night, easily fixed by drinking more water before going to bed. I am fortunate that my insurer pays for everything, because it's not a cheap medication. Nor is it 100% effective; it's on a par with condoms but that's good enough for me!

Actually, PrEP is a damn sight more effective than condoms, providing, of course, that you take the pills as per prescription. With the "real world" figure for its success rate, only one person ever has seroconverted while taking truvada as PrEP as prescribed. The 96% efficacy rate comes about because in a medical trial you have to include everyone within the trial, whether they complete it or not. A few seroconversions while taking truvada were in people who'd been infected just days before being tested for a PrEP trial - they count towards the final result. And in a number of instances in the PROUD (UK) trial there was not a trace of either component of either drug in truvada to be found in their blood samples, meaning that they hadn't been taking the pills at all, but they still count to the end result.

Condoms work 96% of the time when they're used properly. Too little lube, too much lube, the wrong size... all lead to a real world condom success rate of about 86%.

My timeframe could have been shorter like gaynevets, but I get mine through the mail order company of my insurance and I knew I'd always have to wait for it to arrive  by UPS every month.  One I got my first prescription, I purposely didn't start taking it for 2 weeks so I'd always have a little "cushion" of pills and not be stressing out every month if they arrive on time.  It's been just about 2 years now, and I've never run out so I'm glad I "held off" that extra couple weeks.  I don't think I knew about the 7 day effectiveness timeframe either, and I gave it more time to start working

My gay primary care doc wrote out the HIV test lab order and the Truvada script as soon as I said I wanted to go on PrEP. Three days later he called with the lab results and I filled the script. Three weeks later I took my first bare POZ loads from one of the mods here.

I am surprised to see so many people having a hard time getting prep. I live in a rural area i asked my doctor for it and he just prescribed it to me. I am concerned because he didnt mention anything about followup tests and gave me four refills

Definitely talk to him about follow up tests. STD tests if you are having sex and the liver function tests to make sure you are one of the people that it causes liver damage too. After my first month my liver test was up a little from the base line. After 3 months it was up more and just above the line from the normal range. After six months it was back down in the normal range. Need to go in next week for my 9 month round of tests.

Ima neg bb bottom haven't been fucked in years but so wanting to get on prep and let the fun begin. But being in the military does prep pop up on their yearly test will it affect drug testing
