Next Case of Seroconversion

For goodness sake, have a little numerical perspective. There are several hundred thousand guys using PrEP, and 4 have contracted HIV. I personally know more than 4 guys who caught it from a broken condom. If we use the most conservative estimate of 100,000 on PrEP that works out to be a 0.004% chance.

PrEP is working really well. They are already testing different meds for use as PrEP. There is no crisis here.

There is no concrete evidence on that issue.  Either he didn't take prep everyday or he got knocked up by a med resistant hiv. Until they have concrete evidence, I wouldn't treat this as a case.

Totally agree Dr. Scorpio. This is scare mongering.

The guys who are totally pro converting and anti prep are always quick to weigh in on stories like this but never have any facts to back up the claims.  If it can't be backed up then it is fake news or alternative facts.

I am curious why they refer to it as a "study" and even refer to it as a PrEPX trial Study with a few thousand participants in the study around the middle of the article.  Maybe this is because it's not approved in Australia???  I don't know, but seems strange to call it a study.  I am currently enrolled in a PrEP study for Descovy, which has about 5000 men enrolled but that is a worldwide enrollment.  When I first ready "study" I kind of assumed it was this study, but as I read the article there was no mention of that.  I'm sure we'll hear more details, but even if it's the "proven" Truvada taken as normal, I agree with previous posters that the numbers are miniscule.

As far as I have heard there is only one singe case of PrEP failure that can be backed up with hard evidence. I think I have read in here about 2 or 3 other possible cases but there is no real follow up on them to tell the whole story, if there is a whole story. And then someone on here who is anti PrEP uses it to make the logical leap that PrEP dies not work?

Several states in Australia are running studies of how widespread use of PrEP can reduce the rate of HIV infection.  I'm on the EPIC-NSW study (not the one in the article).   It's not a clinical drug trial.  Participants get a full course of Truvada (or generic) for 2 years.  We have full checkups every 3 months including STIs, kidney function and get asked some questions about our sexual behaviour, how well we are adhering to the schedule, side effects etc.  All funded by the state government.

Truvada is approved in Australia but is not yet on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme where the federal government subsidises the cost of medicine for most medical conditions. So outside the studies, we have to pay market rates for PrEP.  This is likely to change soon especially if the studies show good outcomes.

Socialised medicine, mate - it works!

Just read this. Not sure yet how he got infected.

Melbourne man tests positive to HIV while taking preventative drug

There's no data about this case, other than someone who was in a PrEP study seroconverted. There have been many seroconversions in PrEP studies, the vast majority of them coming from people not taking the pill. Until we know more about this, this means nothing.

Many more cases to come. Resistance to PREP is rising :)

Do you have any actual data to back that up, or is that just anti-PrEP wishful thinking? Truvada-resistant strains are extremely rare. None of the researchers has raised any alarm about them becoming more common.

There's lots of bug-chasing dreamers around here who don't view PrEP very positively because diminishes the fun. All these anti-PrEP comments here need to viewed in that context...

I get why some guys aren't happy with how PrEP is reducing the pool of virus out there. I decided to quit PrEP myself for my personal reasons and I'm happier.

But not everyone wants the bug. People have the right to make their decisions based on scientific fact, not rumor. I have lots of non-chaser friends who are on PrEP and it's been a godsend for them to be able to enjoy bb like the rest of us.

They're more likely to get struck by lightning than to get pozzed. But every time another overblown rumor goes around about PrEP failing, they freak out and it ruins sex for them again.
