For me, it def made me more reluctant to start having sex ... though I guess I've made up for lost time since. No doubt there are some guys who made it thru with natural immunity, or were slow progressors. But for most who survived I think it was the usual risk reduction strategies. They didn't bareback ALL the time, of if they did it they didn't do it anon, or they mostly topped, etc. Also it matters when you started having sex, of course. 70's or early 80's was a long time from effective treatment. By late 80's you could most likely make it to the HAART-era circa 1996. What is really sad is the huge number of guys dying '93-94. I was in NYC those years, and I think that's when AIDS deaths peaked in that city. Finally, I really don't get the AIDS nostalgia. It was/is a really shitty way to die.
