Say goodbye to Tumblr... Now what?!

Deciding which task you should tackle first will depend on why you’re setting out to do all this in the first place. Are you more motivated by the sites as business concerns, or do you see them as a service filling a need for the community? These are not mutually exclusive motivators of course, but one would tend to point you in one direction over another.

If two men are seated at their computers looking at and sharing pornographic pictures, what are they not doing? They’re not fucking. If two men are discussing mutual fantasies and fapping off in their separate bedrooms, what are they not doing? They’re not barebacking.

On this site there’s a great deal of bemoaning the state of the ability for men to connect in real time, in real life, for real sex, and even real relationships, because of the obstacles and distractions offered online. There is much complaint that the very way we look at one another has been warped beyond reality thanks to the deluge of electronic porn. Yet as soon as the wellsprings of that smut are closed off, the wail becomes even louder.

You, therefore, as a site owner and content provider are in the (unenviable) position of directing potential development in the subculture, for goid or for ill, whether you want to be or not.

If your eye is on the fiscal bottom line, there’s certainly an argument to be made in favor of going the social media route. Developing those platforms means more eyes in front of more screens for more hours, because the activity becomes the end in itself.

By contrast, a hookup site would meet a present and growing need in the community - with the fall of CL and the steady erosion of other alternatives due to censorship - but the goal of the service is ultimately to separate the user from the screen. Monetizing such services is problematic for obvious reasons, and therr will have to be a strategy for dealing with attempt at abuse of the system by sex workers. Your commitment to the cause of getting bare cocks into wet holes would have to be pretty firm.

My personal preference won’t be much use to you, since I’m not a very representative sample; aside from some tasteful erotica, I don’t partake of much porn, or spend any time on social media...unless I’m trying to hook up. So naturally I’m for anything that gets Tops out of the house and on the prowl, and opposed to anything that might encourage them to relieve their sexual tension in front of a screen.

But that’s just my two cents, which is two cents more than it costs to fuck me, so take it for what it’s worth. ?

For reference, the statement from Tumblr is at https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr

Also, https://tumblr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/231885248-Adult-content

They claim that content will be set to private and only be visible to the owner. I would not count on this arrangement in the long term. I think owners should save the content they want to keep under the assumption that adult blogs will eventually be removed completely.

YIKES!!! I am stunned BUT somehow NOT surprised! It sounds like they are just making Tumblr Accts with "Adult Content" into the annoying "Safe Mode", tho. Will they be deleting ALL the Adult Content? Sorry, maybe I am having a Dumb-ass Moment, here.

What to do now?

I'm okay with no videos .. or limited/limited-size videos .. would be good to have gifs though.  And I'm also up for a pay version that allows extra features - more picture posts?  I don't know.  The thing with tumblr is - it's free and it's private.  As much as people want to complain that things are changing (me included) their storage budget must be astronomical.  Most days I'm hitting the maximum of 250 posts.   So videos - no videos - I'm fine either way.  And I'm fine with a paid feature.

The thing that sets tumblr off are they actually have become communities.  There's obviously a BB community, a trans community, there are tons of splinters of pictures (some are b&w only, some are PG, some are NSFW, some are action), there are action-specific communities.  You might not realize they exist - because they're not named as such - but there are very specific tumblrs that are followed by people who are into those very specific things.

And by having an instant chat feature the ability to reach out to someone online and be able to chat back-and-forth has really fostered some great friendships with guys around the world.   I think that's the part I'm going to miss most.

Anyhow - however you structure it will be great and much appreciated.   As my back-up, I think I'm going to start loading some stuff on Blogger.  Blogger has a lot less features but they do allow NSFW content.  And blogs that I followed years ago are still there when I logged in yesterday.

Do I understand correctly that bbbh not going to be a community site, but rather a porn site?
Also ... Whether it's social or hookup or both, I look forward to seeing what you do next. Though I admit I'm not keen on the trans aspect for varied reasons.  In any case I hope that the close of Tumblr will result in a lot more traffic here, at least from the demographic of guys into this.

My humble opinion on videos: skip them. Seemed like 90 percent of the porn on tumblr was pics anyway, in part because Tumblr would flag porn vids. I have nothing to back this up but also feel like pics and text increase user engagement because they facilitate more rapid sharing and discussion. A vid slows the user down in a way. Maybe because they are too busy wanking haha Also ... all that server strain is hardly worth it.

Anyway, thanks for all you do. This site is the best, and a regular reference on "doing it right" for my own--far less awesome--efforts to create alternative online nasty-ass male communities.

Hat's off.

Good questions…

I'm building a network of interconnected sites that will include niche porn sites, niche hookup sites, a fitness site, a social site, and an online store. Following each of those links will explain things more. But the division is due in part to the legal requirements for each type of content (which have been shifting even after I broke things down like that). In terms of just #BBBH – bbbh.com will be commercial bareback porn, and bbbh.men will be a hookup site. And there will also be Cumdump Network which will be a cumdump listing site where the tops don't have to register to fuck a cumdump (it will be the final home of the Cumdump Network listings on this site). I'm only envisioning one social site, not several niche sites. The way many people express themselves on social media is just more chaotic and fluid than niche sites will allow. That said, users can have multiple profiles for their many personas, and when they post something they can pick a niche. If their post turns out to be popular it will be featured on the other sites in that niche.

In terms of videos… The lack of videos on Tumblr is because they banned new porn videos a few years ago. Some people had tricks to get around that ban, but most people complied and only posted pics. But I'm not trying to just replicate Tumblr. A LOT of videos are posted to Twitter, and Facebook loves showing it's users videos because they're engaging. So I will need videos eventually. But I may not have them initially.

I tackled porn first because I needed to pay the bills. Porn sites convert better (they make more sales for a given number of visits). Social sites like this one or the new one I'm envisioning, and even hookup sites are "traffic sites" – they get a lot of visits, but don't make a lot of money. (Which is why sites like BBRT are so aggressive with paid memberships – which is something I'll try to avoid when I finally get the hookup sites rolled out). It's important for someone like me to have both kind of sites. The porn sites don't make sense without traffic and I can't depend on Google, Tumblr, Twitter for traffic – I need my own traffic sources. And the traffic sites don't make sense unless I have productive places to send the traffic to make money off of it (and banner ads to sponsor sites isn't enough).

So it's a balance. At the end of the day making money has to come first. Only then can I do the more esoteric, community-oriented things.

And BTW, if you spend time on here, you are spending time on social media. Forums were one of the first types of social media sites. ;)

Great mini-education and insight into the workings of the internet.  Now, if only we'd all registered site names way back when no one knew what the internet was going to be.  Like the person who registered "Coke" the sold it for a fortune to Coca~Cola!

PS .. I can help moderate too .. if the site takes off you're going to need moderatorS .. ?

I'm really happy to hear your perspective and hear your interest in the site. I've followed you on Tumblr for many years now and know you know what you're talking about. And yes, I'd absolutely love to have you as a moderator :)

Gifs will be supported from day 1. I have to experiment with resizing huge gifs. If I can't figure that out quickly there may be size limits on the gifs initially (since gifs can be as big as videos), but once I've got size issues under control they'll be fully supported.

I'm also thinking of allowing people to enter URLs for .mp4 video files and then I'll put those in a player I control. It's more of an advanced feature since most users won't know how to find the video URL, but the ones who can figure it out will be popular since they'll have the videos other people will want to watch and share.

I'm not planning on having a limit on the number of posts per day. But I will have checks to see if someone else has uploaded the same pic previously. And if Google's reCAPTCHA (v3 – the new one that's invisible to users) thinks your a bot, you won't be allowed to upload anything. Since it makes it's determination based on patterns of usage doing a lot of uploads could get you classified as a bot at which point you won't be able to submit anything on any of my sites since they're all tied together. And your mentioning it means I'll need to monitor the quality of the posts for people who do a lot of uploads. But if the quality is good, I don't care how much people post.

As far as chat… The chat here is actually based on my new system. I've been needing to flesh that out into a more full-featured system that allows 1-on-1, and small group chats, as well as public chats. [The primary problem with the current chat system is the login from this site to the other site. That problem will go away when everything is on the same site.] Thanks for letting me know that that's important for the social site.

The thing that bothers me the most is that tumblr was a great outlet for porn that featured all kinds of bodies, not just the “conventionally” accepted ones constantly produced by porn studios.  Therefore, sometimes I think these purges happen because porn = profits (for someone somewhere) and when companies lose out to amateur sites this becomes a problem for them. I actually suspect they’ll start going after websites like “onlyfans” in 2019.
