Scenes are not shot in one go but requires stops, repositioning the models, giving directions what to change/to do etc. and then continue the next shot. With threesomes the director the director can focus on just the three guys getting it on. With gangbangs he can focus on the two guys fucking while the others stand/hang around waiting for their turn. But with orgies or groupsex the director needs to make sure all guys present are engaged in sexual activities so the camera can move from one activity to the next. That requires all guys know exactly what to do and when. Probably results in a lot more "CUT"s and regrouping (so to speak). So it takes more time to shoot a groupsex scene. And time is money. One thing I quickly learned is that the camera requires action, you can't just stand there. The actors need to be aware that they have to constantly be doing something and that it has to look natural.
