Bathhouses As Communal Brothels

Bear with me.

Bathhouse. In the name, place you go to bathe. Some of them have pools of one sort or another,  but not the kind you soap up in. All usually have showers. But sre you going to shell out money to go do something you can do at home for free? No. I suppose there could still be urban situations in which having a facility for bathing and grooming close to the place of business would be an advantage, but in many bathhouses there aren’t even any counters in the bathrooms.

Then there’s the spa/health club angle. Now, if there were nothing in the building but the steam room, sauna, exercise equipment (which I have yet to see one single person use), would you go to it? You might, but it would be called s gym.

So if we don’t really go to bathe, and we only ostensibly go for health, why do all these men actually go to bathhouses? Because they’re sex venues. Obviously. And they’re operated as a business. With owners who reap the profit from the basic resource being provided to their clients, which is, again, only tokenly bathing and health amenities, so it must be a place to have sex.

Okay, a person who owns an brothel with no sex workers in it will make no money at all. In order to serve the clients, the resource must be the sex workers themselves.

In the case of a bathhouse, the sex is provided by the clients to each other for free…or is it? Each would not have access to the other if they both did not pay the owner for the access, which amounts, by transference, to paying the owner for the services of the person providing the sex - who ends up being the bathhouse owner’s actual resource. But the clients ate not employees. So essentially, the bathhouse owner makes a profit running a community brothel of unpaid sex workers.

Obviously, the above is an exercise in pure sophistry, but I think there must be a kernel of truth in there somewhere. I happen to know that two Tops coming to CumUnion tonight ate coming specifically because they want to fuck my ass. If I weren’t here whoring my body to Tops for free, that’s money the bathhouse wouldn’t be getting.  I mean, I get called a whore enough as it is, I might as well claim it…

To be fair, there are bathhouses that offer discounts to tops on certain days, I'm not real sure how they determine which guys are really good unless they know them.

I also had an uncomfortable situation, at least for me, several years ago at a bathhouse in Denver where several employees were offering to let me in for free. Since I was regularly fucking the employees in question it felt way to much like prostitution, and for the record I refused after the first time. It had not occured to me at until just now, but maybe they were actually whoring me out without compensating me. Even here in no fuck Portland I have at times felt like one of the bathhouse owners has struck me as trying to overly accommodating to me but has not actually tried to comp anything for me, because to quote him, "the sexual energy you bring in." So it is entirely possibly I have been used in the way you are saying, although I don't exactly feel abused since I definitely enjoyed myself.

In another way, in my situation, it is pretty close to the opposite of men paying the brothel, since I'm almost certain none of them have extended the freebies and good will for me to be a bottom. I have fucked literally thousands of horny bottoms for them free of charge. Apparently I'm not o bothered since I'm about to leave for the baths.

A fascinating concept- will have to remember this as an after dinner topic of conversation once I start having dinner parties again….

but what are the alternatives?

unless you invite guys over to your place - or you do it in a public area - you will have to pay someone… either pay for a hotel room- or you go out to the bar (where theoretically you will need to pay for drinks) till you meet the guy(s) you want to go home with

we do live in a capitalist society so you have to pay someone

unless we form a coop so “we” own the bathhouse….. but that would get boring as it would be the same guys all the time- so it would need to be like a timeshare where you can swap your time for time at a different baths

if any of us win one of those billion dollar lottery’s - maybe we should promise to use a few million to buy up some of the last of the bars and baths and turn them into non profits to ensure they survive

Communal brothels?   WTF?  Okay, so now I am going to get really snitty and get out Webster's dictionary.     Isn't a "brothel" where sex workers do their business? I thought a bath house was where guys gave it away for FREE?  What is going on here?  Listen, I like the majority of posters on BZ.  But this crap, and I do mean crap, does not support cummunal brothels as a means for individuals to solicit for the purposes of prostitution.  Let me go further. If an individual came up to ME, and asked if I might be interested in having sex for money, not only would I kick the hell out of him I can assure you he would never step foot in that establishment again.  I am no Mr. Universe, but just let some punk ask me for money in exchange for sex and let's see just how long he lasts there.  My guess is less than five minutes, but I am an optimist!!

Dude. Did you even read the post? What you just wrote has zero to do with the content. No one is talking about paying anyone for sex, or solicitation/prostitution. The post is a philosophical consideration of the nature of a bathhouse’s business model in relation to its clients, nothing more.

And, yes, I basically did already point out that brothels employ sex workers, in the fourth full paragraph, so the “really snitty” resort to Webster was simply redundant.

Well that’s got to be a can of worms. Do you mean the offer discounts to certain select individuals, or to anyone who claims to be a Top, and what if one of those Tops happens go be a vers Top and gets into some bottomy action on the premises? But if they’re giving discounts to specific chosen individuals to encourage them to come breed the other clients, that just seems to underscore the premise, I think.

I did, and basically what you are promoting is prostitution.  I don't know of any local bath houses that employ sex workers  (in the US) now I understand locations in Europe and Brazil do. But in the US, that's waling a fine line.

They are not "unpaid" sex workers, they are there voluntarily.  Yes the owner makes a buck off our backs, for room rentals and lockers, but I have never been approached by an individual asking me to have sex in exchange for money.

People call "escorts" when they want to pay for sex and "have it done their way, but meeting in a bathhouse is a recipe for disaster.  You may not want to "host", you may not want to pay for a hotel room, but using a bathhouse as a place to meet for sex (for payment) is really pushing the envelope.  You do realize they arrest people for doing what you just described.

@ellentonboy You are totally misconstruing the intent of the OP. The argument is that even though the people providing the sex aren't getting paid, because the owners/operators of the bathhouse are getting paid, it is tantamount to a brothel. @ErosWired is not promoting or advocating anything that is not currently taking place. He is describing a possible interpretation of the existing nature of bathhouses and their operations.

Lets hope some prosecuting attorney  doesn't try to connect the dots. With the way things go it would shutdown almost every bath house and arcade.

With this thinking they might be able to make the argument that every place is operating a brothel

To my knowledge, only Nevada allows brothels and I think they have to be 50 miles from any metropolitan areas. They are monitors by the local board of health, girls are tested monthly and are to only preform safe sex.

I might be wrong on the distance

Let me think this out.

NOTE: I am going down that twisted yellow brick road on this one. LOL. Anyone that knows me, know that I tend to go down the lighter side, to much dark stuff trying it consume us these days

If a meeting is at a hotel, that hotel is technically operating a brothel

If I am hosting I am paying to get played with

If I got to some ones room, he is paying me.

If I host at my house I am both operating a brothel and paying for it, if friends play also in effect, I am doing both

That makes me both a pimp and a prostitute.

WOW

Just running this to extremes, no harm intended.

No, it is not a brother and the OP's intent is based on a flawed tenet. If one goes to a brothel and pays the one running the brothel money (in the form of a cut from the paid sex worker e.g.) it is money that is exchanged for sex. If I go to the baths and pay money for my admission, I am offered no guarantee of anything other than my locker or room and a towel. I am not guaranteed sex nor even a flirtation as too many people who have frequented these places on an off night can attest. There is not even a guarantee that anyone else will be in the bathhouse.

I'm not sure, since I identify as versatile and do not exchange money for sex period, I have not actually sought the discount anywhere. I will admit this discount has been offered to me, but I have always refused. I've always hardcore about not paying for or getting paid for sex and have always unequivocally refused all offers. My adamance to not get paid for sex is the main reason I did not really participate in any porn when I was younger, although I am visible in the background but not having sex (wearing a mask) in 3 orgy movies (2 gay one bi).

After moving to the west coast and experiencing laxer laws about sexual devience, I've also been discomforted with winning free passes for winning in various sexclub contests over the years, I really enjoyed participating in the contests but haven't for the most part used the free passes that came with winning them (at one point I had collected a several year supply of lube and did accept at least 1 jockstrap). I also have a hard and fast rule not to enter the same contest again once I have won it.
