part 19 statue 1959 Congo



This statue represents the first confirmed case of HIV in a human. It is linked to a blood sample taken in 1959 from a man in what is now Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. this statue represents this male. There is no photo known of this man, so it is only a impression. While this is the earliest documented case, it's important to note that HIV may have existed in humans earlier, with some evidence suggesting transmission from animals to humans around 1920 in the same area.
