I believe the comment system on this blog sometimes doesn’t give people the appropriate emphasis. Therefore, I decided to add a separate entry. This is in response to my entry, “The Mourning of a Porn Superstar and the Question of Hypocrisy for Falcon Studios, Derek Hartley and the Rest of You Anti-Barebackers” from June 14, 2012. Sirius XM Radio Personality Derek Hartley responded June 16, 2012. His blog is available at DerekHartley.com*. You can also follow him on Twitter*. Derek Hartley Writes: Since you cited me, I feel obligated to respond. You make a lot of assumptions about me and what I judge and don’t judge and I think you missed the essential point of what I was conveying about my friend. I know that you want this to be about bareback vs. condom but that never entered my line of thinking in what I wrote or how I thought of my friend. His aggressively destructive ways were not okay with those of us who knew him best and many of us worked hard to help him pull his life together. His drug use was a serious problem. It left him erratic and unreliable. He did lose friends and boyfriends over it. But ultimately there was nothing any of us could do to alter his course or assuage the profound sadness that haunted him that no amount of love, drugs, sex, fast food or heavy lifting could conquer. Ultimately, I don’t see anything in your central thesis here that connects to my friend. He was a paid exclusive to Falcon so yes, if he did scenes for someone else (condoms or bareback), they would have had a problem with that as a breach of contract. I don’t think it would have made his private behavior any easier or harder to take if he made different films. Those of us who knew him knew him as a person, not just as someone who fucked on camera. That kind of thinking, by those who only saw him as a piece of meat, contributed to his downfall more than the unwillingness of his friends to intervene. What you write suggests that how we all felt about him hinged on the kind of porn he did, and to that I must respectfully but vehemently disagree.
