Fucked At Cannon Afb, Nm And Don't Trust The Inclusive Military

Fucked at Cannon Air Force Base

 

The following is a 100% true event, not a story in the conventional sense but something I've been caring around for a very long time.  I was in the US Air Force and stationed at Cannon AFB, NM, this place is a major shithole, it is literally 100 miles from any where, but I digress. At the time of the follow event, 1983, I had been in the AF for 5 years and had decided to make it a career.  Now back in those days if the AF found out you were gay you were given a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD) which could make it harder to find a decent job and again I was looking to make the AF a 20 year career.

 

I was in Blue section at Cannon and had made friends with a female coworker of the same rank I was, lets call her Susan.  Susan's husband was also in the AF but in another section.  She would invite me over to their house to play cards with her, her husband and their sometimes live-in baby sitter, Danny. I knew the 

first time meeting Danny he was gay, he was very gay.  I had not had sex with another guy since joining the AF (remember its been FIVE LONG YEARS) and I was tempted in asking Danny back to my place to fuck but I couldn't risk it so I jerked off instead.  Four months later I was transferred to a base in England.

 

Fast forward three years.

 

I was taking an avionics class and low and behold the instructor was Susan. After class one day, she got me up to speed on what had happened in the intervening three years. She had gotten a divorce, custody of the kids and, now to the point of this posting, she said a "gay sex ring" was busted about six months after you left, this was Susan's exact wording. The bust included Danny, a couple of other townies and about a dozen guys from the base, including one from Blue section. Susan told me the guy busted from Blue section knew me and really liked me, Susan gave a vague description of him and at this point she kinda stared at me.  I could not for the life of me figure out who it was, I had slept once or twice and had several beers since so the memory was foggy, so I played dumb throwing out some descriptions of guy s I knew wouldn't have been in the bust. I think she either suspected me being gay or Danny picked it up on his gaydar and mentioned it to her, in any event this shook me to the core and pushed me deeper into the closet.

 

Anyway of the dozen AF members; 10 were enlisted and given a BCD, two were officers and asked to resign their commission.  I have no idea the aftermath of those events.  Even in today's AF with no discharge because of being gay, your career could be derailed by something as simple as an average performance report. There is little proof needed in a giving an average as there would in something lower but an average would make the climb up the ladder much harder and you could top out at your rank and be discharged.

 

I have always wondered why Susan had brought the gay sex ring bust at Cannon.  Did she believe I was gay or that I was a part of this ring but didn't get ratted out?  I'll never know, just as I will never know what happened to Danny or what happened to the guy from Blue section or even who it was.

 

I did manage to make my 20 years and the point of this post is "IF" there are members of the US Military on this board do not trust the "gay friendly" message coming out of Washington, you could get an anti-gay supervisor and ruin your career in a legal way.
