I came out gradually over the span of the spring semester of my freshman year at college - I told my closest new friends in January and then finally told my parents the week after school got out, which I timed so as to tell them right before I went to North Carolina for a week for a conference. I told my father first, since I knew he'd handle it best - I did it over a game of gin rummy, and while he did take it phenomenally well, it was the only game of gin rummy he's ever lost to me. I told my mother the next evening, and it was difficult for both of us, but by the end of the conversation I still had a loving mother and to this day she makes every effort to overcome her worries and concerns.
