tobetrained Posted Friday at 11:40 PM Report Posted Friday at 11:40 PM In the thread "Is Trump building concentration camps" (not linked here as it creates a massive box breaking up the text), another person thought it wise to consider redefining the terms and physical meaning of those places during the holocaust. As someone who's family was impacted -- nowhere near as badly as those in the Jewish or Roma communities, but still very significantly -- I found that thread to be beyond reasonable. In my life, I've had to deal with (mostly) far-right holocaust deniers (some on the left as well), but also far-left anti-fascists who seek to force all others into their false-binary choice worldview. For both sides, it's for their own political gain by way of a, "you're with us or against us" mantra and, in their own way, redefining events as part of their ideological rhetoric. To any Germans, ahead of time I say this to you which is what my dad taught me, "You do not hold people now responsible for the sins of the past. You never demand an apology. If not for anything else, because you never know what's buried in your own back yard." I live by that. I'm opening this here and will NOT respond so others comment only. 1) When is something so awful as to not be part of any future political tug-of-war? 2) What defines for you, conversationally-speaking, political extremism? I have so many other questions, but I'll leave it there. Quote
