How to negotiate a sex party?

I've been to a few sex parties in my life, both private and public, but I've never really got the hang of it. As a bottom, there are two groups of people who are, at first, readily apparent: the hot guys who you would love to have fuck you, but who take themselves way too seriously; and the not-so-hot guys, who think that your hole is public property. If you go after the former and don't have success, it will be noticed by everyone. On the other hand, if you go don't make it clear to the latter right away that you are not going to let them fuck you (this usually takes a bit of effort), everyone thinks you're just the party cumrag (and not in a good way). So I usually just end up being kinda stand offish, and never have a good time ... which is not the case when it comes to other group experiences (like sex clubs or hotels). Anyone have any pointers of how to strike the right balance for a bottom? What are tops looking for exactly at sex parties, and what are the turnoffs?
