I still plan on finishing the “reconnecting with my gay uncle” story. But going forward, all my future stories will be based around the 90s.
I like to keep things in my stories believable or at least avoid pushing the boundaries of what I personally can suspend my disbelief for. That being said, writing the types of stories I like gets challenging setting them in the modern day because the prevalence of PrEP and undetectable statuses just makes the presence of HIV feel too safe and benign. Like a wild animal that got old and domesticated and lost its fangs.
But the 90s were definitely a golden age of risk for naive young men venturing into the shady world of anonymous gay sex. Where a poz guy’s dick still had teeth, so to speak.
I may have only been a small child in the 90s, but I remember enough to create stories in that era with authenticity.-

I think this is a great idea.
Too many people write stories in the present day as if PrEP and more importantly PEP did not exist, and that makes it hard to get caught up in them.
