Anal condyloma-HPV

Some months ago small warts appeard on my anus. Since then, they've grown bigger so I went to the doctor. He asked me some blood exams before figuring what to do and that was how I found out I was hiv+. After that, he told me that I woundn't need to have a surgery to remove the warts, because, with the medications for HIV being taken, the warts would disappear by themselves. He says that many patients had the same problem as me and after taking the medications there were no more warts. I started taking the medication about 2 weeks ago (Reyataz+Norvir and Biovir). Since I'm not so patient to wait for the medications to have some effect on the condyloma, I used the wartec cream. I've been using it since last week. The warts became smaller but they didn't disappear. Has anybody here had the same problem as me? If so, did the warts disappear with the medication for hiv?

Anal warts are usually caused by the human papilloma virus. Your doctor probably assumed that the HIV antiviral drugs would handle the papilloma virus. I've never heard of this. I'm HIV neg, but had anal warts from raw anal fucking, and the doctor burned them off with repeated applications of caustic podophyllin (sp?). The treatment was very painful, but I got some awesome Percodan to ease the pain. About six years later, still HIV neg, the warts came back, and a new doctor also treated them with podophyllin. No pain that time, and they have never returned.

That doesn't sound medically accurate to me; if I were you, I would do more research and get another professional opinion.

HPV has its own vaccine, Gardasil, which your insurance (if you're fortunate enough to have it) may or may not cover for men. My doctor--a gay men's health and HIV specialist--told me that I was not a candidate for Gardasil because apparently HPV comes in two varieties, one aggressive and one not-so, and Gardasil is only effective against the latter. It's important to get the vaccine if you can, because HIV+ men have a higher incidence of anorectal cancer arising from cell dysplasia caused by HPV. If you can't get the vaccine, then find a gastroenterologist who specializes in gay men's health and start getting yearly check-ups for anal dysplasia.

I had anal warts removed about 12 years ago, and even then the doctor did it by laser ablation. The recovery was very painful and took several weeks, but by all accounts it was far less painful than non-laser methods and the recovery time far quicker. About a year and a half ago, I had a check-up with a doctor who specializes in HPV in gay men, and he did laser ablation to remove some high-dysplasia cell areas in my ass. It hurt a lot afterward and took a few weeks to recover. (It didn't stop me from hooking up with a friend, an unmedicated poz top, a week later. I went hoarse screaming into the pillow, but damn was it hot taking his load, knowing my ass was so open to his seed.)

In none of my experiences with HIV, HPV and wart removal has any doctor said anything about HIV meds being co-effective with treating HPV. Ditto lungfucker about the awesome pain meds though. ;-)
