I've looked for an answer to this but without any luck. If the answer is there, I apologise.

Is is there a setting to stop my profile coming up on an external search engine (google in particular) when my user name is searched?

Not really. For that reason you should be careful about what you put in your profile. But realize that search engines see a limited view of what logged in members see. To see what a search engine sees, logout and look at your profile.
