Syphilis Treatment (Pertains to All of Georgia)

I wanted to issue a major warning to all in Georgia and possibly other areas regarding syphilis treatment. The CDC has issued a warning that there is a shortage of penicillin-G the preferred drug used to treat syphilis infections. They are now pushing an oral antibiotic called Doxycycline and telling you it's just as good as penicillin. IT'S NOT! Just do a basic Google search for CDC treatment of syphilis and the CDC's own website will tell you this drug is less effective. ALL other drugs are less effective according to the CDC! Unless you are a syphilis chaser find a doctor who will give you penicillin-G in shot form not this cheap junk.

I'm not sure why you are posting this.  First, in general, the CDC does not give advice to the general population they provide information to healthcare providers.  Like most federal agencies they work through intermediaries not with people directly.

To the substance of your post, the CDC says right here: https://www.cdc.gov/std/tg2015/pen-allergy.htm That penicillin is the only treatment for advanced or congenital syphilis.  And again here: https://www.cdc.gov/std/tg2015/syphilis.htm they say it is the preferred treatment for syphilis.

If you want the straight dope on what the CDC said about Penicllin-G, go here: https://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment/drugnotices/bicillinshortage.htm  Basically, they are telling *doctors* to stop prescribing it for things other than syphillis, since it is the preferred treatment for syphilis.  If you want to give someone grief about there not being enough penicillin-G, how about giving it to Pfizer, the only manufacturer, who refuses to manufacture enough!

Sorry I re-read my original post and was not intending to imply the CDC is pushing Doxycycline Georgia Department of Public Health is the one pushing it and they are using it at many of their county clinics. I have spoken with Michelle Allen at the state office as well as people in my regional office they are all defending it as just as good as penicillin.
