POLL: PrEP or DoxyPreP - challenges and motivations

4 members have voted

  1. 1. What has been the main issue (or biggest barrier) for you in obtaining a prescription for PrEP or Doxy-PEP (doxycycline for STI prevention) from your medical provider or healthcare system? (Select one)

    • My provider was unfamiliar with PrEP or Doxy-PEP, didn't know how to prescribe it, or refused due to lack of knowledge/training
      0
    • Provider reluctance, judgment, stigma, or moral/ethical concerns (e.g., concerns about "risky behavior," antibiotic resistance, or risk compensation)
      0
    • Insurance/cost issues — coverage denied, high copays, prior authorization delays, or couldn't afford even with insurance
      1
    • Logistical/access problems — difficulty getting appointments, long wait times, trouble finding a willing prescriber, pharmacy issues, or follow-up/lab requirements too burdensome
      0
    • No major issues — I was able to get it prescribed relatively easily (or haven't tried yet but expect no problems)
      1
    • No desire - I have made a conscious choice to not use one of both of these medications
      2
    • Other (Please outline in response)

  2. 2. What is (or was) the primary reason you started (or decided to start) taking PrEP and/or Doxy-PEP? (Select the one that best matches your main motivation.)

    • To eliminate or drastically reduce fear/anxiety about HIV during sex — PrEP lets me enjoy bareback sex without constant worry about catching HIV, removing a major source of stress in my sex life.
      0
    • To feel safe having bareback sex with multiple or casual partners — I wanted the freedom to hook up, be versatile, or have frequent partners (apps, scenes, etc.) without condoms, knowing PrEP provides strong HIV protection.
      0
    • To prevent bacterial STIs (syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia) in addition to HIV — Doxy-PEP (or combined use) was a big factor for me to lower overall STI risk, especially after repeated infections or high-exposure periods.
      0
    • To enhance sexual pleasure, intimacy, or spontaneity — Bareback feels better/more connected; PrEP/Doxy-PEP removes barriers so I can have raw sex without planning condoms or interruptions.
      0
    • Because of my sexual activity level or recent risk exposures — I have (or had) frequent partners, receptive anal sex, group play, chemsex, or recent STI scares — making prevention medication a logical next step for harm reduction.
      0
    • To maintain or improve my dating/relationship dynamics — In open/non-monogamous relationships, or to date/be intimate more freely without HIV/STI concerns dominating conversations or trust.
      1
    • None of the above / Other primary reason — My main motivation doesn't fit these (e.g., doctor's strong recommendation, community norm, travel/PrEP tourism, post-PEP transition, etc.). (Optional follow-up: Please describe briefly.)

In an attempt to summarize some of the many thoughts shared in the various threads on these topics, thought I'd create a quick survey!  A second survey in this same channel coming.
