imagesCAJJHHQW.jpgDecember 1st sees the world once again commemerate World AIDS Day.* A time to pause and remember the millions that have succumb to AIDS since its discovery in the early 1980′s.* Its also a time when the world can ensure the HIV pandemic doesnt leave the media spotlight, and raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, raise much needed funds for the various charities which work tirelessly to develop better medication, treatments, vaccines, and ultimately, perhaps a cure.* Not to forget those charities which offer help and support to those affected by the HIV virus and who continue to live with it.

In previous years, I’ve not really done much for World AIDS Day.* I’ve worn the symbolic red ribbon, donated some cash to either THT or NAT (see the links to the left for more information on these great organisations).* However this year, due to a number of reasons, I’m taking a much more proactive role in proceedings, and have decided to volunteer my services to a HIV Charity which I’ve got to know well over the previous few years as its where I go for my routine tests.

I’ve no idea what i’ll end up doing on Thursday, but I’ll be there to do what ever is needed of me.* Handing out leaflets, shaking collection tins, just making the cuppas for the others while they do the graft – i’ve not a clue.* But its something that I feel obliged to do.* What I do is not important, its the fact that I’m there to do something if needed.* That I’m showing my support to the cause.

Being an active member of the bareback community, HIV and AIDS is something that is always close to home, and a real risk we take. Unlike some people I’m not a “bareback at all costs” advocate.* Instead, I like to think I’m a more moderate condom shunner.* I’m all for enjoying the delights of unprotected sex, but only if*you are aware of the inherant risks it carries, and accept the likely outcomes wholeheartedly.* Now this does not mean one has to be a “bug chaser”, far from it – it merely means you’re educated enough to know what you are getting yourself into.* Remember, there is no cure for HIV.

If, like me, you fully understand the dangers and risks, and you accept those risks, then that is where*I become a devout advocate of the*bareback sex and*#BBBH (bareback brotherhood).* That way, when (not if) you test positive for HIV, you know that only you and you alone are responsible.* You took a course of action which you knew would have only one outcome.** I hear of too many people who barebacked because it was “horny” or “like the pornos”, and then when they test positive they’re shocked, upset… they didn’t think it could happen to them.* Or that it was only bottoms/tops/older/younger/rough fuckers/leather fetishists* (delete as appropriate) who could catch it.

That breaks my heart.* People who contract the virus unexpectedly, or through ignorance of the facts… this is what we need to combat.* I’m not going to get on a pedastal during World AIDS Day and lecture the virtues and benefits of using condoms, nor am I going to turn into barebacking berating jerk, that would be hypocrital of me.* All I can do is do my part to raise education*amongst those people who need it at one end, and help raise awareness of the issues affecting those living with HIV at the other end of the spectrum.

This World AIDS Day, please spare a thought for all those people living with HIV around the world.* If you’re positive, together we can work to a better future.* If you’re negative, please take this opportunity whilst there is plenty of information around to educate yourself fully on the virus… and once you’ve become informed… then make an educated decision about whether you accept those risks, and wish to continue/embark on the journey of bareback.
