Anyone here know of what the issues are with Stribild & Viagra?

I'm getting conflicting information from my Primary Doc and the specialist he referred me to regarding ED meds.  Primary doc says Viagra is not to be taken at all, and the specialist says he has patients on HIV meds all the time with Viagra.  There were other options available, but Viagra is the most affordable.

Researching the meds, the only information I've found is from the drug companies stating that it should only be taken once very 48 hours at the lowest dose.  I have not found any information that clearly states what the risk is.  The pharmacy also did not flag a medication interaction when I picked up either.

My primary talked about changing my meds because of this, and I'm meeting with him in a week to discuss.  Atripla fucked me up with the side effects and I don't want to change back to that.  Stribild I don't have any side effects and would prefer to stay on that.

I take Cialis 5mg daily along with Stribild.  I haven't had any tests done since I have started taking it, but was told there was no interaction.  Cost is about $127CAD a month, but my health benefits covers $114 of that, so very inexpensive for me (I usually pay around $13 for 28 days).  Government pays 100% of the cost of Stribild, including the dispensing fee.

I have my next set of VL tests in late december, with my ID Dr. appt in early January.  Will let you know if the numbers are off..

The cobicistat in stribild acts to delay processing of some drugs (which is why it's there - as a boosting agent, so you don't have to take meds so frequently or in such quantity). It acts in prety much the same way as rotonavir does, blocking the main pathway in the liver that's used to metabolise some drugs, including the ED drugs. Medical advice in the UK is to start at a quarter of the standard dose of the ED drugs and if that's not enough I know some guys who'll add an extra eighth of the standard dose. The trick is balancing an good hardon against the side-effects of the ED drugs: no-one needs the sort of head pain I had when I inadvertently took a full strength levitra!

Standard dose for viagra is 100mg every other day and for cialis 20mg a day. I can't remember for levitra, I'm afraid. So you'd be looking at 5mg cialis or 25mg viagra. But for fuck's sake be careful with the poppers: they're best avoided by anyone using ED drugs as you're effectively taking two drugs that work on the blood pressure in different ways and to different ends.

I haven't ever tried Viagra, but I think you need to be careful taking Cialis or even Viagra with Stribild. Last week I took 5mg Cialis for 3 days in a row, and it worked really well but the 3rd day I had some pretty bad muscle aches & a fever & I learned that there is an interaction between Cialis & Stribild. Basically something in the Stribild boosts the levels of Cialis. So the doc told me to take 2.5mg a day of Cialis, or take like 5mg or 10mg every 2-3 days. Just have to be careful and aware of the dosing times and how much you take. Everyone is different.

For me I found that Cialis is absolutely great if you take it every other day or even every two days, and then it won't interact with Stribild at all. And it stays in the body so long that I don't even need to dose every day anyway. Best thing is to just talk to the doc.

But once I figured out a good dosing schedule with it, Cialis has given me the hottest sex ever!  :P

Thanks for explaining how the drugs work.  Makes a lot more sense in that regard.  Still not clear on what the interaction with Viagra is.  Is it blocking one of the medications from doing it's job? or is it being blocked by the cobicistat?  I did notice when I started trialing the drugs that I had morning wood every day for a week after the first dose so wonder if they are being slowly metabolized as well.

Totally get the issue with poppers too, pretty much keeping away from them unless I decide I'm in a bottom mood and haven't taken any ED meds, and a fuckbud has them.  Haven't bought a bottle in months and still acclimating to getting fucked without them.

So far have not experienced any of the side effects you mention.  Just glad my dick is doing its job again.  I do feel I last longer too  :D

So I got an answer from my Doc, and he had to go back and look everything up based off the research.  The good news is that Viagra does not impact the HIV meds in Stribild.  It sounds like what BearBandit brought up with the cobicistat being the issue.  Essentially the risk is that the Viagra will work for too long and cause an issue.  The recommendations from the drug companies are to take the minimum does no more than 48 hours, yada yada.  So all is good.
