I don't use hotels often enough to be familiar with the routine. How do visitors deal with hotel reception staff? I guess they need to say "I've come to visit Mr. X in room 69"?

Belfast-Bottom, hotels in the US frequently have minimal staffing overnight, while the main doors are left open to allow guests free access. As long as you walk in and look like you belong there, you're almost never challenged by the clerk on duty. Some hotels have room doors that open directly on to the parking lot, making it even easier to allow visitors in.

As long as you look like you belong there, the staff will rarely ever challenge you. In fact, that's usually just at the time when I'm trading text messages to acknowledge arrival and get the room number, so I'm on the phone as I stroll past the front desk. The staff isn't stupid and probably knows that a certain amount of this goes on, they won't risk embarrassing a guest unless you look like a burglar, drunk or serious threat.

Lately, I've noticed that hotels which cater to airline employees ARE being trained to challenge anyone who walks in the door. The worst that can happen is you give them a room number and they will call up to announce you. I got kinda pissed at one clerk who did that to me, and I huffily told her I was there to see the guest in room 425 (or whatever room it was). Turned out, I had pulled into the wrong hotel, and they didn't even have a 4th floor, lol. That was embarrassing.

For my safety, I usually ask tops to text me when they are in the parking lot. Then, I will give the room number and keep the door unlocked for them to walk in. It is for my safety but I have found sometimes it turns tops off when they don't get the room number before they head to the motel. I guess I can understand that they don't want to be ghosted after they have made their way to the motel.
