Meningitis Vaccine for Pride Attendees: SF Public Health

During my visit to the San Francisco Department of Public Health today, I was alerted to this advisory:

It's a good reminder to people in Florida, where there is an active outbreak of meningococcal disease among men who have sex with men (MSM), and also to people who attend national gay events like San Francisco Pride, to talk with a medical professional about whether the meningitis vaccine (and 5-year booster) is a good option for you.

Thanks to both of you for alerting people over a month ago. Being on the opposite coast, I was familiar with Southern California meningitis outbreaks among MSM over the past decade, but I was not aware of the current outbreak in Florida.

As always, thanks for the scientific back-up, fskn.  You've probably forgotten more than some us will ever know about the medical aspects particular to our lives.  That said, now go Breed some hot young thing ...... (and since you probably already have this morning, do it again)

@hntnhole, I wish! Work has sapped my sexual energy lately. Hopefully I'll be back in the saddle soon. For now I must take vicarious pleasure from yours and other people's breeding exploits.

As for scientific backup, you can probably guess that I like to arm people with documentary proof. If we print out that SFDPH alert and bring it to our doctors, wherever we are in the country, they are unlikely to turn down reasonable vaccination requests. At the very least, pieces of paper like this can empower us to ask our doctors, and can be used to start conversations about preventive care.

I'd be really happy if people added their experiences to this thread over time. Did folks discuss meningitis vaccination with their doctors? Did they get vaccinated? Was there any reluctance? Any trouble getting the cost covered?

That's just not fair.  But, the situation will right itself, and then - the boys in SanFran can breath easier again, knowing you're on the prowl.  Hope the workload lightens up a bit for you, and not just for the obvious reason.  We gotta take care of ourselves, to enable us to take care of others, right?

It's clear that you not only enjoy providing documentary proof, you're very able to do it.  You have access to resources that most of us don't, and thus I'll bet every guy on BZ reads your posts/replies very carefully.  I surely do.  Thanks for every word of superb, reliable information.  You're a first class mensch in my book.

I second that.  @fskn is an amazing resource.  I pay attention to everything that he writes.
