I  got that spelling from some initial reports, even the Vatican website (I    think), but I    revisited them, and they have all normalized around the English spelling at least in English.  A lion in sheep's silk robes, but so far, generally I LOVE everything he has said since he has become Pope, against war, admonishing journalists to promote peace rather than whip up hatred, and be cautious with but enter the digital fray.  I hope he takes up the challenge to Pope Francis to go to Gaza.  Judgement withheld, but hope springing again.  [think before following links] [think before following links] https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope.html

Here's a better link.

I hope I don't get a strike for posting this on this forum...a lightning strike.

He is the second American pope as Pope Francis his predecessor was also from a country on the American continent- Argentina,  and not from Europe.  He is the first pope from the United States, though.

Yes, but...

If you speak with most people around the globe, they'll refer to those from the United States as "Americans" and people from other countries as from their country of origin (Argentinian, Brazilian, Colombian, Peruvian, etc.). I don't think I've ever been referred to as anything other than American when I've traveled (at least to my face). If I referred to you being from Canada as an "American", I reckon you'd consider that insulting. Yes? 🤣

Pope Leone XIV?  All the news reports I've seen show his name as Pope Leo XIV.  He's been "in office" a few hours - give him a chance before bashing him.

Yes, his name is Pope Leo X1V. It's unfair for anyone to judge him so early. He made an incredible impression on the faithful. He has my support.

Really.

So uh, good thing he's a boring nonentity who you can just all ignore and let him sit in his palace 500 million miles away.

He doesn't have any "charisma" like the last one so you can forget about it. Unless Biden staggering around for 4 years made you feel so ill inside, you prefer to talk about "religious politics" than sex.

Yes, but... when referring to native Americans or indigenous population of these countries, people are more likely to call them Americans rather than Argentinean, Brazilian, Colombian etc. as these terms are reserved for the whites that formed the original Spanish colonies rather than the native Americans. Native Americans in these colonies where never seen as equal by the Whites and where usually enslaved in one form or the other. Most native Americans on the continent of America do not identify with the colony-states that now claim affiliation to this continent and simply identify with their native Americanness.

I will give you this much that while we Canadians do no like being confused with the U.S. and being called "American", we are as American as any other country on this continent.

Bit of a stretch though. Like referring to Ketchup as "tomato sauce" or a tomato as a "fruit". Yeah, they are, but you wouldn't put ketchup on pasta or tomatoes in a fruit salad.  🤣

You must be from Alberta! I hear that y'all aren't too happy about the political direction there. 🤣

Thanks to Pope Joan, they gotta make sure the Pope ain't got a pussy...

I am not a prude & definitely not a raving Christian biggot BUT, I think a bit of respect is appropriate in this discussion. If I made similar inappropriate comments Re: "There are only 2 genders" or even harsher invective I WOULD BE DRIVEN OFF BZ.

Not all LGB are atheists & some are in fact, deeply religious. Respect is not something restricted for the LGB / trans communities.

Sorry, if I hurt your feelings! I didn't mean to be disrespectful.

I just find it utterly ironic that to become the leader of an organisation known for its homophobic policies, a man known for his homophobic remarks has to let another man fondle his testicles...

I agree with the fact we shouldn't care; at least theoretically, I personally don't give a damn about what religious leaders think of world citizens' sexuality.

This said, even Francis apparently seemed open-minded but he wanted to attract more folks into the church.

His words towards homosexuality and trans, he welcomed us but always as sinners! Always people judged by the divinity.

And this is a trap! The real progress would be if religion completely STOPS to create rules on human sexuality.

The main problem however, is that politicians all over the world lick the church's boots, so, they create laws influenced by their thinking. The consequence is they don't have any authority on our singular actions but in the end all of this involves all of us.

I'm sorry, I might offend someone now but I resigned:

hoping that religions stop ruling sexuality and moralizing the masses, seems like someone struggling to teach shit not to stink.

Did I give the idea?

To avoid misunderstandings: I am not rudely talking about people's faith. I have nothing against someone believing in Christ, then God, then Allah or whatever they want.

I am against religious institutions. Against men self-defining the voice of divinities.

Those folks are ambitious and want power!

So, by definition, what's the more effective way to keep the power for themselves? Control everyone "under" them.

That's why it's IMPOSSIBLE to hope that religion changes its mindset!

Yes!! Religions do have followers & their approach to how society should act is often critisized but society in general has rules, incest, bigamy, rape, murder, cannabalism etc that we follow & there are those who see no reason why some of these & other generally frowned upon acts should not be legalised or at least accepted. Most other groups or organisations also have rules that are non-negotiable & must be followed eg: Australian Defence Forces have rules on hair length, facial hair whereas, some European countries (Sweden, the Netherlands) are more relaxed. The UK has even drawn a line on men in women's sport & some men REFUSE to have sex with their trans counterpart.

We cannot always use RELIGION as the target, of ridicule, when these same people will have their own individual sections & rules in society that they object too.

and those laws govern the quality of life of LGBTQ people. Laws and social diktats do matter as gay people are affected by it.

He  and the Catholic Church have trouble accepting ALL parts of a person.  They want you as a gay person to show up at the doors of the church  but not with the gay or trans part of your self. However, It is not a welcome if you don't accept someone for who they are. Where the Catholic Church goes wrong is it doesn't seem to understand that it is promoting hatred against gay and trans people when it doesn't accept their homosexuality or transsexuality.

They are also not accepting of divorce (as child of divorce, I can HONESTLY say that my life did not get better after the fact. It GOT FAR WORSE), re-marrying a divorce etc.

The various religions & branches of these establish guides to the way we live our lives & the vast majority of us use our own moral compasses (I drink alcohol, have M2M sex & I am ambivalent to the degree to which abortion is the answer to unwanted pregnancy resulting from pre-marital sex) to build a life around these diktats that make us grow into a valued member of our communities.
