In that four year window, I didn't have any friends die (although on a visit back to Toronto after enlisting, I did learn of the death of a couple of former co-workers), but I think that's more a function of my personality (I don't tend to form large networks of friends and acquaintances by nature) and my relative youth.

If I were doing this sort of research, I'd personally look in two directions. First, the effects of promiscuity, which leads fairly inevitably to "accidental" barebacking (with alcohol as a contributing factor), which leads to diminishing fear and guilt over barebacking and potential exposure and a general exhaustion and fatalism over worrying about HIV. That's more or less what happened with me. (Note that this suggests that attempting to carry on the promiscuous gay culture of the '70s and '80s but in a "safer sex" direction may have been at best an inadequate response)

The other direction I'd look in is the meth epidemic that started around that same time. For some reason, meth use and barebacking seem to go hand in hand, possibly because meth use seems to encourage more "extreme" forms of sex while high, and also because meth makes it difficult enough to get and maintain an erection, even without a condom. Many of the men I meet today who bareback routinely and/or are HIV+ have either past or ongoing meth use.

The term was deeply debated for over a year back in 1995--96 while "chatting" on IRC = Internet Relay Chat. I moved-in with a gay man & started spending hours online every day. You had to use a 14.4 modem & dial a phone number to connect.  It was discussed many times, I wanted the term RAW, but was shot down due to WWF (before they had to change World Wide Wrestling because WildLife claimed they had a trademark)  So the "bareback " movement decided that like horseback with NO Saddle, Fucking without Condoms was reffered as Bareback. It was against the so-called Condom Nazi and rationalized like women who say "My Body, My Choice" when some discussed abortions.

Many of the Bareback sites that promoted Bareback were either legally closed down -- or just like San Francisco, many either Died or were too sick to maintain the sites.  It was more common to be local networks known as BBS, Bulitin Board Systems. I remember we put 14 phone lines in my friend's home -- each connected to the 14.4 Modems to run our local BBS. I also worked for our local Bathhouse from 95 -- 96. I also had a Lifetime account with a BBS in San Francisco that I would dial in an 800 number. There were several dating sites including DudesNude & A4A, but only options listed were SAFE SEX ONLY  or Anything Goes. They would not address barebacking at all and many guys would not answer the Status question.

BareBack City was the first to have a "Hook-up Now" option. The owners were Kenboi & his partner (who was the brain) & it started a couple of years after they made their house the LA Sex House. They made a couple of movies with that title. Then neighborhood complaints got them evicted since they were only renting the house.

Barebacking has Always been the best way to fuck. But if you go back 100+ years there were no condoms. Married couples may have had many babies, but some were still-born or if they lived, not everyone made it to age 21.

While the web was being developed, laws were changing just as we didn't need speed limits or stop signs before there were cars & roads. Then the law was more about censorship. If you watched/looked for inappropriate content on a site you owned, you could be held responsible for what others said on your site. However, if you didn't try to weed out things & just let Anything happen, then you were not responsible for anything and people could post ANYTHING.

I remember Bareback City, and that it eventually became unusable due to its popularity (the owners, as I recall, basically were footing the bill for the site themselves).

So the only reason I'll nitpick over when "bareback" became the accepted term for condomless sex, is that I'm pretty sure I remember reading an article before I enlisted (i.e. pre '95) which talked about straight female hookers in San Francisco charging for "bareback blowjobs".  Although the SF connection suggests that the term could easily have jumped from gay men to straight sex workers.  On the other hand that also suggests that the term was generally in the air at the time.

I hope we can get together sometime...I would absolutely love to fuck a load into a guy who was so involved with all the stuff you got into.  I sometimes wish I'd spent those years whoring around So Cal myself instead of being in the Army LOL.  But loading up your ass seems like the least I could do in appreciation!

Yes, I was way-involved for a smaller Porn company HDK. I sent an email to the owner asking to be in their first video -- Bareback Buddies & the second video was "Bareback Rauch" were both shot the 4 day weekend in January 1999. That is what happened, & 2 days later I cancelled my room at the resort & stayed the rest of the week in their guest room with the guy who became my partner in June 1999 until we seperated in 2007. 

First camera crew was from Canada & the video photographer was cute, but we were told the 2nd day that he had to return home the night before because his grandma was ill, or maybe she had died -- sorry I don't remember everything.

Bareback City was actually closed down when they moved to the midwest -- they said it was for Kenboi's Grandma, but it was Kenboi who had issues. He improved & the boys moved back to CA.
