Adding Profile Pic

On my profile I have the big background pic, but I don’t know how to load the small profile pic in the center. Every time I try I just end up changing the background pic. Can u give me some direction? Thx.

Do you see an icon in the lower left corner of the avatar pic? That's where you click to change the avatar.

Every time I try to add one...it tells me my pic is too big. I’ve tried to reduce the size but I’m really not accomplishing anything. Help?
