In New Zealand, if you’re eligible (as young guys fucking around bareback will be) PrEP is paid for in the public health system so the drug is free although you pay a $5 dispensing fee for a 3 month supply. You also have to see a doctor every three months and get the necessary laboratory tests. A doctor costs about $40 and the lab tests are free. Actually you can dispense with some of these small costs if you use a pharmacy that does not charge the dispensing fee and if the doctor is willing, with the lab results, to write a repeat prescription without a further consultation (a repeat prescription alone would be about $15). These are NZ$, US$1 v NZ1.6 or so. 

If the guy is not at high risk the drug is not free but the arrangement is still reasonably affordable, about $100 a month locally for a months supply or less if self-import on the internet (which is legal) with a NZ prescription.
