This comment came up on a thread I posted trying to get a listing of bars with active backrooms:

I'm assuming he is questioning whether it is a good idea to post such information online about spots that have activity that may be illegal, and tip off law enforcement in the process. This may very well become a larger issue as we slide towards authoritarianism, under an authoritarian who draws significant support from theocrats that have made homosexuality a target.

I understand the reluctance, I've used online resources as way to find hookup spots, both legal and illicit since the late 1980's before the www existed there was Gopher BBS, which was harder to search, but that didn't stop me as a teenager, I successfully found the active hookup spots around campus using it, and while I saw a prototype of what was to become the World Wide Web my senior year, it did not actually become a reality until after I graduated. Starting in the mid 1990's we had a proliferation of websites that acted as clearinghouses for such information. The main ones that I knew of were cruisingforsex now defunct, with squirt, sniffies and gaycities are currently sort of fulfilling the role, but not as their main purpose. There are also numerous forums and boards on other sites like this one that you can sift through to try to glean that information.

For me personally, I was reluctant to post that information for many years, but in the last 15 or 20 years have contributed what I thought would be useful to other users. I make an effort to provide info on this site, when I know about the area or an event.

What are your thoughts? Are we making a huge mistake posting the information online, especially with emerging political situation here in the US?

To me, I believe it's becoming more dangerous to post anything online that would raise conservative eyebrows.  For those with a discerning eye, there are queens-aplenty in the current administration, but unless they have their tongues up Someone's ass (shudder - I mean FIGURATIVELY - ) , which tells me the aforementioned "Someone" couldn't care less personally about who's fucking who.

That said, he could easily figure out that leaving the immigrants/minorities/folks-who-aren't-pale alone for a while; there are other targets for his plump fingers to point at.  For all I know, the Epstein files might contain some really surprising evidence; hence the desperation to divert attention from that whole sordid mess.

To the question though, I don't post any particularly personal information on anything.  In the event that I want to, there are other, more old-fashioned (and safer) ways to communicate.  Plus, I've been "living in a foreign country" as well.
