Another way is to use the Brave web browser. This has private browsing and private browsing via TOR and it gives a visual confirmation that you are indeed connected via TOR.

We’re not taking computers, just iPhones and all browsers on iPhone have Safari as their base. So things like Brave aren’t an option.

Look up man in the middle.

I assure you that unless you were using a VPN, they could see everything you were browsing.

BTW… all of my sites will throw an error and refuse to work in a man-in-the-middle  scenario. I’ve had users complain that the site wasn’t working and the culprit was a corporate firewall doing what you describe.

  2. VPNs are a hot topic lately, so I figured I’d start a thread where they could be discussed.

I’m headed to China in a few weeks. It’ll be interesting to see what I can and can’t access without a VPN and how well the VPNs work. China is at the top of their game playing whack-a-mole with VPNs, so I’m thinking what works in China should work in slightly less restrictive locations.

Anyway, the three I’ll be trying are:

    1. ExpressVPN, $13/mo, but comes with a 1GB eSIM which should be useful. Historically this has been the best VPN for China, but lately there have been reports of issues.

    2. Mullvad, €5/mo ($5.83), has a stellar reputation for privacy.

    3. V1VPN, $6/mo, Europe-based but targeted to work in China. My theory is China focuses on the major VPNs, so I’m hoping this one is somewhat off their radar.

When I’m back I’ll let you know my thoughts on each.

  3. @sluttony - assuming the devices themselves aren’t compromised, the only way I know for governments to break the encryption is to run a proxy firewall like China does. This site will break and be nonfunctional if it encounters that scenario as some users have reported when trying to hit the site from inside a corporate firewall.

And VPNs get around proxy firewalls. Which then means the government has to ban VPN apps and block the IPs when it identifies them. I’m headed to China in the next few months and there’s a lot of discussion among tourists as to which VPNs work and making sure they’re installed before landing in the country. There’s also eSIM cards that somehow get around the firewall, but I’m suspicious of them. I feel like the Chinese government may be giving tourists a rope and letting them hang themselves with it.

CRAP.  How is this being enforced by the states @rawTOP.  I need to assess my own risk with my site....

Most of the states have taken the approach of letting civilians sue the sites for “harm” to their kid.  But some have gone further and are more draconian.

Does anyone know if this 'Blocking' will affect Ireland?

Ireland is a completely different country, so no. The reason some states are affected which shouldn’t be is because states sometimes share IPs. Countries don’t share IPs AFAIK.

    They probably are.

Naturally, NO credit card assigned, but some ask for age verification by checking the usual box and most are certainly more graphic than here.

Again, of all of them, none are blocked.

Companies that are registered abroad and have no business presence in the US often ignore US law just as I ignore laws in places like Uganda (though I do block Uganda).

  7. The Supreme Court ruled a few days ago in support of Texas’ age verification law. This means that all the legal challenges of AV laws are basically dead. Age verification will continue and may get worse.

In reading the commentary on a porn industry discussion board it seems SCOTUS has created a distinction between “obscenity” and “obscene for children”. That’s a big problem. All conservative states have to do now is make laws of what they think is harmfully obscene for kids and all sorts of content can be restricted - such as all LGBT content.

Others in the industry think a federal AV law is next. At that point I’ll need to block the entire US. And with the UK being blocked soon - that would be an existential crisis for the site.

There’s some debate in the industry as to whether the <33% rule (that protects social media) will stand with the new “obscene for children” concept - if it’s obscene how can it ever be OK?

If you’ve voted Republican in the past 10 years - all of this is on you…

It appears that anyone who can afford a VPN can bypass the blocking and need not worry.

For the rest of us, (no matter how long you've been a member, nor how much you've contributed to the site) its 'Thanks for coming, but you're no longer welcome here'.

To be clear - I'm blocking the UK under duress. You are very welcome here. But the government that you (plural) elected is forcing me to block your country. That is an issue on your end - not on mine. Be mad at your politicians and fellow citizens for voting them into power.

Simply banning all 'GB' will not work I'm afraid. Its more complicated than that.

Although the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not part of the UK, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), the international body dedicated to promoting international standards), codes them all under "GB-". You may wish to consult SO 3166-2:GB - (the coding system that gives geocodes to administrative divisions of the United Kingdom and the aforementioned islands).

Finally, does anyone know if a copy of the site (as last updated before the ban) will still be available via the 'wayback machine'?

The data I'm using is a 2 character code. So not using the standard you mention.

  10. There are no registrations for "BBTopUK", so sign up again.

That said, the site software connects to an external service to determine if someone may cause problems and then denies them the ability to sign up. But typically there's an error message they did that you didn't mention, so I don't know what's happening in your case. (And for future reference - I never override the determination of the external service.)

It may be your email provider - some won't deliver BZ emails. I know we've had problems with Microsoft in the past (they own Hotmail), not sure about if they're still a problem.

Site admit will (if not already), need to be aware of the fact that the law being brought in only applies to the UK. It does not apply to three nearby populated islands, which non-Brits might not appreciate.

The Crown Dependencies[c] are three offshore island territories in the British Islands that are self-governing possessions of the British Crown. Guernsey and Jersey, (both located in the English Channel and together known as the Channel Islands), and the Isle of Man (in the Irish Sea. Access from these location should continue.

I’ll be blocking country code GB. The places you mention have their own country codes. Before July I’ll confirm that those country codes are being used.

  12. Just a heads up that if the site changes it's look dramatically not to be concerned. The software that runs the site will be getting a major version update. I won't upgrade to the initial new version - I'll wait a couple, but it will happen at some point in the next few months. When that happens…

    • The look of the site will change somewhat (not sure how much)
    • You will no longer be able to login with your user name - you'll need to use your email address
    • "Status updates" will no longer be supported (e.g. the twitter like messages that are in the sidebar of the home page)
    • There will be changes to the tagging system.
    • The "editor" you use to add messages to threads will change.
    • You'll see "..." when someone is typing a new message, and then it will appear without needing to refresh.
    • (and other changes)

I'll post in this thread just before the upgrade. I will probably wait until late April to do the upgrade…

For whatever reason I'm in Colorado on cell network, AT&T/Consumer Cellular and I'm getting directed to MalePrime saying that in Utah. I haven't had issue with this for close to 9 or 10 months and this is cropping up again. Did someone muck with the site adminsettings or something?

Cell networks are the most  likely to juggle IP addresses around, so not surprising.

The further the question, why is ISP address being used? Cant towers and GPS be used? The current method works for PCs, but mobile device users are being punished. I'm in Ouray Colorado but AT&T/ConsumerCellular is pushing it through an IP that's claiming I'm in Salt Lake City Utah which I have never stepped foot in or driven through. There needs to be a better way to determine location if you care that much about the site and thr user base.

Websites have to request lat/long AFTER the page loads. AND it doesn't really work on anything but mobile, AND the USER has to be OK with giving the website pretty much their precise location. That isn't a solution that will work in 90% of the cases. If I had more time/energy I'd write some code to let mobile users exempt their IP AFTER the initial redirect to Male Prime, but I don't have the time/energy at the moment.

  14. A few updates…

I started a separate thread about it, but the UK will be blocked come July.

@viking8x6 is right - prostitution is defined so broadly in Florida that it includes porn production (except maybe content swaps between creators where no money is exchanged). Porn isn’t illegal, and distributing porn isn’t illegal - just paying the models is illegal.

And @BootmanLA is correct - it’s unclear what SCOTUS will do. On the negative side even one of the liberal justices started with the assumption that kids need to be protected (not with the assumption that free speech needs to be protected). On the other hand it’s not clear that Texas will get an outright win. More likely is something in the middle which is still a loss for free speech.

FSC is not happy that they only got a half hour to present. I may hit up one of the board members because they seem to now be looking for examples that aren’t traditional porn sites - and community sites like this are good examples of AV being unworkable. At the same time, I don’t want the attention that would come with a mention in a high profile court case.

  15. Sadly what’s happening in red states is not isolated to red states. UK’s Ofcom has issued really strict guidelines for implementation of the child protection act. The cost to comply makes compliance impossible. And, while I have no business presence in the UK, the legal ties between the US and the UK are close and I’d rather not risk the rather hefty fines (£18M).

Unlike what red states are doing it looks like this will affect social media like X and Telegram since it doesn’t have the exemption for less than 1/3rd adult content. So I expect this to be a major news story in the coming months.

Oh, and the block should work better than the red state block since it’s an entire country (countries don’t exchange IP addresses like states do).

Lastly… Voting matters! Don’t just sit there and complain.

  16. Good News: A judge blocked the Tennessee law that would have also gone into effect yesterday. (A nice win thanks to FSC).

Bad News: Florida has now been added to the block list.

Related to that - even porn production is illegal in Florida (and has been for a while).

And a reminder that we'll have a better idea of where all this is headed end of day on the 15th after the Supreme Court hears FSC v Paxton.
