If you take 2 pills at least two hours (best is multiple hours, up to a day) before you get fucked and follow with one pill after that for at least the following two days, the guy is protected. Not as much as he'd be if he would take it every day but still pretty much protected. If the guy stops taking prep he should be fully unprotected no later than a couple of day after stopping.
Funny, how I stressed myself out because of that in the past, before I flushed them all down the toilet.-

Soz for sloppy writing mid high. I want to know how many days on average until preps protection wears off for a long term user. The pig has been off for about 2 weeks here

There has been this french Ipergay study, that suggests taking two tablets up to 2 hours before sex:
The specific strategy tested was:
- Two tablets of tenofovir/emtricitabine (Truvada) from 2-24 hours before sex
- One tablet 24 hours later
- Another tablet 24 hours after that oneSo a total of 4 tablets over 3 days for episodic sexual activity, with an option for daily use for more frequent exposures.
