Attaching avatar picture to the little square in my profile

How do I put a picture in my profile so that the little square currently just containing a great outline of a head and shoulders can have a picture of my choice in. Then I can also have the picture next to my forum posts. Everyone else has one  just not me!!!!

Up near the top left of the page you should see your username and the blank square. Click on the dropdown next to your name, and choose "Profile." You should be able to click on the square and upload a picture there.
