ktopper
It appears we have a new President Elect barring some major election fortification, which possibility I do not discount. Based on legacy media predictions we can expect the following: Concentration camps where non-MAGA types will be locked up. LGBTQs will be shot on sight. Democracy will end. Women will be fired from their jobs, publicly whipped, and put back in the kitchen. All abortions will be criminalized, despite the fact that it benefits men as much as women. Millions, probably half of America, will be deported. Buckle up guys, it's fixing to get exciting. Edited 15 hours ago by ktopper 2 2
TaKinGDeePanal
Concentration Camps = Extermination Camps. The Democratic Party will most likely be declared a terrorist organisation, and all its registered members (the lists will be forced to be surrendered) treated as such, with extrajudicial punishment to ensue. That's 47 million people no longer here ... BTW, not sure if "exciting" is the right word. 1

PozTalkAuthor
I'm not American but I'm scared. Definitely scared as all over the world we depend on America (technology is the first, then health, most meds and tech patents come from USA). Btw I want to try to be rational: Trump has won due to money of course, but overall due to his communication strategies. I have no deep knowledge on USA election system but from media we have here in Europe, EVERY election has been somehow "predicted". I mean, in 2004 despite wars and stuff, we were sure about Bush. On 2008 between McCain and Obama, we weren't surprised about Obama. Same for 2016 Trump. And same in 2020 "Trump can't win again". Biden? In my opinion he resigned too late, but I'm not so sure about Harris. Unfortunately, together with money, charisma wins. These are my 2 cents, trying to keep scare under control as contributing to cry and destroy makes no sense.

BarebackedBear
Preface: I firmly believe that in addition to being a rapist, a misogynist, and just overall a disgusting excuse for a human being, Trump's rhetoric and his focus on grievances and his strong man attitude towards ruling rather than governing puts him squarely in the category of fascist. I'm also well aware that he's going into his second presidency immensely better prepared than he was for the first, after years of being groomed for this by a cabal of conservative interests with their own agenda. That being said, I feel like there's a little bit of catastrophizing on the left in light of the news. I think in the short term his economic policy is going to be a cheap sugar rush for the economy which is definitely going to have long-term knock-on effects. With a power shift in the Senate, any nomination he wants to make will get pushed through. Yes, it's bad. But until he starts to make good on these threats I'm stopping short of calling this an existential threat to democracy. He not only won, it looks like he actually crushed the popular vote unlike the last time he managed to game the electoral college. I still think we have enough rational, sane people in this country to hopefully keep the worst of the damage in check over the next four years. I have to believe that at this point. PozTalkAuthor
Yeah, I agree, let's try to be rational, or we run the risk of doing what Trump wants: power in division. No sense in fighting one with the other. In Europe the situation is not so different as we have lots of questionable figures. Namely Orbân, Salvini and Vannacci for Italy, with Meloni also but I judge her a little less extremist than the others. Then Marine Le Pen, Alice Weidel, Santiago Abascal... Not to speak of Argentina's Miley or Brazil's Bolsonaro who's no longer sitting in the power's chair but he has lots of fans. Let me say that it's not the face and name to worry me, but the thousands, millions, of people following them. These figures have liberated hate speech, and there are many people out there who finally feel comfortable to say and do whatever their instinct pushes them to do. So, at this point my question is: what have we done wrong? Why are there many former activists, now turning to the other side? My painful answer is, the market. Everything's become something to buy and sell, including human rights. LGBT instances are treated like an advertisement, rainbow flags everywhere used by capitalism for self-promotion, economy is what it is, not to speak about climate change and global migration. It's difficult to live in a complex world which changes every day, IMHO conservatives give the illusion that life becomes simple if one person decides for everyone.
BarebackedBear
This is what I'm primarily afraid of. I'm coming from a place of privilege. I'm a white male, age 18 to 49 as The Simpsons joke goes, meaning I'm basically the demographic with power in this nation. I'm even straight passing, even though I hate that phrase. But I'm still a fag. And I'm concerned that groups that hate now have their mouthpiece and figurehead back in the White House. I remember what it was like last time. I live not far from Charlottesville, VA. I remember the neo-Nazis with tiki torches. The administration is going to have a lot of power, at least until the next midterm when we have an opportunity to take back the Senate. I hope we don't lose any Supreme Court justices between now and then. But I'm mainly concerned about what this is going to mean in the neighborhoods. In the communities. In the streets where people are emboldened to act on their hate once again. 3
PozTalkAuthor
I can talk as "privileged" too, but when a president is dispotic we never know what to expect, I guess he has the power to change every law possible, to corrupt judges and whatever, and surround himself just by people he wants. I don't think he arrives to kill people physically but remember, when you're reduced psychologically to nothing and the world isolates you, body's death is just a detail then. As a person working in tech I'm scared as anyone can take control of tech and cut you off if you don't talk how they want you to. And it's not necessary to ban people from platforms, just prohibit some words - like they already do now if you want to monetize some contents.
BarebackedBear
1 hour ago, BlueSaphir said: Americans are stupid I've been saying for years, but especially since Trump entered the political scene, this country has a serious problem with education, specifically around government and civics. It's not a blue collar versus white collar thing. No sane person can look at what the Republican party has served up for nearly a decade now, both at the national and local level, and feel that this is really a long-term solution to real problems that real Americans face. Both sides are guilty of engaging in partisan identity politics, but in the Trump era that's the only thing the GOP can offer.

I also work in tech, and that's another fear that I have. Especially with the distrust of legacy news outlets and the rise of sites like Twitter becoming the primary news source for a lot of people, and how these media empires are owned by individuals who are a little bit too cozy with the administration. This isn't anything we haven't seen before, though. I think if you're of a certain generation you must have learned in school about the Hearst media empire. I doubt anyone reading this is old enough to actually remember that first hand. But then again now we've come full circle to my last reply talking about the lack of education in this country in the area of civics being the root cause of a lot of what we've seen lately. Hearst also used the "America First" branding on his media and in praise of fascism's rise in Germany after his shift to the right. Every old concern and fear is new again. 2
PozTalkAuthor
Tech is a paradox: if on one side it can allow you to get informed globally, on the other side a dispotic government can use it to address people where it wants. Twitter/x, that platform is dangerous and scary, full of fake news and hate speech. Into my group we say it's a parallel channel for 4Chan. Then let alone people misusing AI, creating deep fakes and so on! With photo and voice cloning you can make a person say whatever they want and damage someone's reputation forever - guide an election campaign this way. But the problem is not tech itself, it's the lack of education. When did it start? I don't know, but for current 20-years-old and later age, I fear it's too late to learn. 1
