The homicidal Deathmocrats will finally have their geriatric “remember-me” fingers off the red box, and hopefully the new Red-rum-licans will (maybe-but-maybe-not) know how to de-escalate.

I think it refers to the Original Post, or it's author.

It's interesting how threads seem to gain a life of their own, and veer off on a different course than the OP (😜) originally suggested.

Thanks 😘😘. Enjoy reading your comments, on the various topics discussed 🤣🤣🤣

All good (say I , the OP) great to see a diversity of thought even when it doesn’t favor my own interpretation. Bring it on and keep it coming 🙂.  The chat inspired me to look at stats on civilian casualties in the conflict, even one is one too many 😞.  I hope we the residents of the planet figure out collectively how to de-escalate before the cost of disagreement is the entire species. Where’s a big scary homo-sapien-uniting alien when you need it?

Despite the world's best efforts & a majority of the world's population desirous of peace, this is REGRETFULLY, IMPOSSIBLE. There will always be world leaders, Putin, Netanyahu, Xin Ping & off-the-grid groups like Hezbollah, MAGA, Israeli illegal settlers etc that want more than they have or are entitled to & are seriously overjoyed when their efforts involve violence, death & the displacement of thousands of INNOCENT men, women & children.

I hear you on differing viewpoints. To be able to disagree, however strongly & then to be mutually happy on discussing another issue is the way social systems should work.

Also looking forward to the futures neg & poz (LoL😁) discussions 😘😋

True, we don't want to misunderstand and thinks it means Old People...  LOL

Not far off the mark (62) but, most times we are only as old as our last fuck. Shit, I really am becoming an OP, I can't remember when that 🍆 was 🤔😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I can see Putin totally intent on resurrecting, the Easter Bloc. I don't think anyone would dispute that BUT, for him, to be SO STUPID as to press the button & taking the nuclear option. I don't believe he is THAT INTENT on the Russian people  & himself being blown into the next galaxy. Despite everything he says, I think the most likely to go nuclear, is Trump. He is so unreliable, in everything he says & in All HIS ACTIONS (06 Jan 2020). He cannot be trusted as to which way his agendas will flip.

Putin just fired an ICBM into Ukraine that could reach any European capital and could contain nukes. But I bet NATO will keep poking the bear.

I completely agree.  Putin is an autocrat, despot, whatever you want to call him, but he's not crazy.  He won't use Nukes against Ukraine, for two reasons:

1.  That would invite a similar retaliation

2.  Once nuked, the entire area for miles and miles would be unusable, fenced off for generations at the very least.  Entering the area would be guaranteed to cause anyone a horrible lingering death.  Putin wants the Ukraine for the agricultural potential, and nuking the area would obviate that potential for generations.  That crap he mouths about it being Russian territory since Peter the Great is nothing but revisionist historical turds mouthed by an avaricious little mini-man; a shallow-at-best excuse for some adventurism as he grows older.

3.  The President-Elect, however, is the wildest of cards in the mix.  Dull, incurious, self-absorbed, poorly educated, just for starters.

The bombing of Syria after the white hats staged the Assad chemical attack and the assassination of Soleimani would be two examples of Trumps erratic behavior gone bad, but that same erratic behavior produced a brief detente with North Korea

My interpretation (but I’d love for people to share facts to move me if the facts support a new interpretation) is that in general US and NATO are much more offensive,

I'm not sure if you mean offensive in a warfare sense, but since we're talking war, I assume you must. Who has a history of invading, or assisting in the overthrow of legitimate governments of, neighboring countries - NATO members, or Russia?

The problem, at its core, is that Putin is at his core an old KGB/USSR stalwart, and he's never gotten over the humiliation of his country's (in essence) empire of satellite states being stripped from its control when the whole thing imploded from mismanagement and corruption. Worse, Russia, this supposedly great historical center of the universe of Eastern Europe and Asia, ended up nearly bankrupt and begging for food from their enemies of the last half century - western democracy.

The icing on the cake, the part that makes it so bitter for him to swallow, is that we actually gave them that help. So he's like the disabled person in a wheelchair who got there because his best friends talked him into hotrodding on a dangerous road and caused an accident that left him partly paralyzed, in front of a building with several steps but no ramp.

He grudgingly has to ask passersby for aid in getting his chair up the steps, only to be pissed at them for helping instead of being pissed at his friend who pushed him into racing on the dangerous road in the first place.

I don't like to put words in anyone else's mouth, so I'm trying very hard not to in this case. But that comes across pretty much as "we have to let Russia do what they want because otherwise things may get worse".

That was, I believe, the approach of all the western governments in the 1936-1939 period. Things nonetheless continued to get worse. Markedly so.

It's hard to respond to anyone who thinks the Assad chemical attack was  "staged", but yes, some of his actions in the Middle East were insanely erratic (but aren't we told that he and he alone, in his magnificent wisdom, brought peace to the middle east? by establishing diplomatic relations between Israel and a few countries so far from its border that they'd never actually had any physical conflict at all?).

But to suggest that's what caused "detente" with North Korea, as opposed to their calculated flattery of him, which naturally caused him to gush and blush like a schoolgirl - think the "love letters" he stole from the National Archives' custody as an example - seems.... what is the phrase I'm looking for here.... woefully naive? I think that's the phrase.

This is so true in my opinion. I’m a European, an old one (baby boomer). From a country that was occupied by Hitler. You Americans (I guess most of the members here are Americans) must realize that Putin is a mafia boss. He is a murderous kleptocratic criminal who has broken most of his promises. He is not interested in peace, only peace on his terms which is total anhilation of Ukraine. Making a so-called pact with Putin is the same as making a pact with Hitler. And we saw how that ended up.
