nekofox Posted July 11, 2018 Report Posted July 11, 2018 https://www.adam4adam.com/blog/2018/07/health-stis-on-the-rise-among-prep-users/ Despite all the talks of fantasy and all, we still have to stay grounded on occasion in situations like this. While it'll help against getting HIV, it's the other stuff that so many forget about that you have to watch out on. All in all, I'm still an "if it happens, it happens" but at the same time too, I'm still wary when dealing with who's around.
Guest Cutedelicategay Posted July 11, 2018 Report Posted July 11, 2018 It's important to understand the difference between infections from viruses and bacteria. Bacterial infections are very easy to cure and are completely curable. Viruses like HIV are manageable and not curable. Yes the risk of barebacking on Prep is to open up for bacterial infections but at the same time it protects from the incurable HIV. That's called risk management of the health. Guys take Prep not as second line of defence after condoms. Prep is the first line if defence nowadays allowing men to enjoy sex in the most natural way. Btw no sex activity is risk free. STI like syphilis etc can be acquired through most innocent act like frottage and oral. Prep is not the only reason for spread of STI. I will advice guys to be careful of Hep C if they take Prep and bareback. In fact there is a clinical trial going on to check if regular use of antibiotic like Doxycline can prevent bacterial STI. They are using this antibiotic as Prep. I asked my doctor in Canada but he said the trial is in its infancy and funding is not approved in Canada. One of the HIV specialist in Toronto is leading the case in Canada. I don't remember the website but if you Google you will find it. The website is an authentic health website.

This makes sense to me. I didn't follow the link in the OP but PrEP has given me the confidence to get fucked more, and throw away the condoms. So naturally my risk of other STIs is higher now. But for the reasons you point out I view that risk as acceptable. Plus I take some confidence in the fact that I am now getting tested for STIs every 3-4 months, which is far more than before I went on PrEP, so early detection and treatment is more likely now.
Moderators drscorpio Posted July 12, 2018 Moderators Report Posted July 12, 2018 They are also ignoring the effect of PrEP testing regimes. Before I was on PrEP, I might go a couple of years between STI tests. Now I get them regularly. More testing means more infections being caught. 1

Us PrEP’ers, if following the PrEP routine right are getting all our tests done every 3 months. I bet the rate of testing amongst non PrEP users is far smaller on average! Also, the tests also include a complete blood count and a metabolic panel, which may pick up on other issues outside of the PrEP and STI monitoring.
Veytoss Posted August 18, 2018 Report Posted August 18, 2018 In regard to Hep C, I suggest this website : https://nomorec.nl/en 1
wildbottom Posted November 18, 2018 Report Posted November 18, 2018 Here it all is in a nutshell... PrEP daily, prevention against HIV Doxycycline 100mg daily prevention against syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. Immunizations for Hep A and Hep B (95% of Hep B cases go away by themselves), Mavyret 8 week treatment (cure) for chronic Hep C (45% go away by themselves). In addition, take the 23&me or another and look for the Delta deletion x2 - if you have that, you're already immune to the CD4 version of HIV.

Surely widespread adoption of this would accelerate the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of these bacterial infections? We're already hearing about superbug variants of gonorrhea. 2

But, this preventative approach had equal benefits to all three infections, but a reactive approach (taking the doxycycline AFTER exposure) had good effects against Syph and Chlmid but had no effects against Gon. Very interesting stuff.
Truversebb Posted November 21, 2018 Report Posted November 21, 2018 I simply can’t believe that preventative antibiotics would be prescribed in this fashion!? 1

That's why they're testing it in larger sample groups. Like someone else said, surely this reduces the effectiveness of Doxycycline over time, but maybe not at such a low dosage - maybe the body simply takes it in and creates a wall of defense, waiting for it to be used - if that's the case then it's no more dangerous than taking it AFTER exposure, since it would only be reactive if you catch an STI - and you'd then be taking it anyway..
