HIV up in Orlando

Came across some news that Orlando Florida is now the #2 city with new HIV infections in the South, #3 is Atlanta. I thought it had to do with new influx in population to the area but researchers already took that into account. Knowing how gay-friendly, very pro-Prep and pro-testing Orlando is, I did not expect this. The population skews young and more educated than the average joe, (with UCF being in it). What do you think is the reason for the uptick that doesn’t seem to slow down?

West Palm area here.  I heard it's because of covid more people are going to the doctors when they feel flu like and get diagnosed with acute HIV.  Normally they would ignore the symptons saying it was just a flu and go undiagnosed.  But that only explains the general spike, not why it's on the rise in Orlando.

Not sure if it's just more people being medically conscious right now like Eric said and we're just seeing the number of unaware people finally testing to prove positive, or an actual increase in infection rates, but guys in every part of FL seem to prefer bb. I Googled some more, cause I'm curious now.  PBS had an article calling Miami the hot bed of HIV and the "epicenter" They said it's a lot to do with the party culture and tourism.  People not getting tested and still having sex.  I've hooked up already with a couple in Ft. Lauderdale, and with them it was almost a non-issue, they "checked my head space" first is all then we had fabulous sex! And when hooking up on BBRT, I'm totally upfront and haven't met with any backlash and it doesn't seem [banned word] with anyone.   I was confused because I've talked to some on here that have been chasing for years and can't get it.  I guess what MtnOtter says is true, It's local culture...  For Orlando, maybe because people aren't traveling as much out of state, and guys from Orlando are coming down to South Florida?

There is a multitude of reasons, but the main ones are simple, it’s a growing area, healthcare is lacking, and the younger, generally “healthy” population is sexually active. Additionally for those raised in the south sex education is basically non existent.  Then there is religion which basically says don’t have sex at all unless getting a woman pregnant.

Weird, in all EU countries HIV cases drops since prep came available. as i speak for the Netherlands new HIV infections has dropped from 1200 to 600 a year (2020) and still dropping
