I acknowledge this is anecdote and not data. I was on prep for several years. During that time, I routinely hooked up with guys from apps and Craigslist without discussing status. I visited bathhouses in Dallas and backrooms in New Orleans taking every load I was offered multiple times. I did not seek out toxic tops,  but I am sure I must have taken some toxic loads. I am still negative.

To piggy back on this post, i too have had similar experiences. I've participated in high risk activity while on prep (Houston, FLL, and Vegas bathhouses taking all loads that were offered from some real characters). I've contracted plenty of STDs but always managed to stay HIV negative.

this is, as said before, anecdotal of course--but feels relevant.

Tangentially related to this post: does anyone know if there is a place where we can discuss the appeal of consciously choosing not to use prep but still having raw sex? I'm not talking about bug chasing.

I think most people who bareback that aren't on PrEp are not actually planning to bareback. They want to use condoms, but they failed at it.

This was myself when I was younger. I wanted to avoid STI and specially HIV, and I knew condoms were the only way back then. I always carried condoms in my wallet. I would always start with a condom, but "somehow" the condom would disappear during the sex. The horniness would clog my best judgement. I started hooking with strangers when I was 17, and being young and horny is a bad recipe for taking good decisions.

The situation would be something I like: I'd start fucking the btm with a condom, sometime in the middle they would remove the condom off my cock for sucking me. Feeling a raw ass on my cock would override my best judgement. And then at the end, I would feel guilt and ashamed for doing something I knew it was not good.
