How kind of you to feel sorry for them and desire to help.

I use to fool around with an ex-con from the Bronx in the 90s. He was a thug and a prison bottom.

Advice: place large funds on their commissary before you tell them your gay.

Curious why you would advise that?

Doritos, Cup-o-Noodles and Kit-Kats are prison currency.

I just doubt there are any prisoners in the US who would maintain a non-transactional relationship with some random gay dude in some European country they've never heard of.

Kentucky (where all of the guys I've written are housed) is just a long roadtrip away to pick them up when they are released 🙂

Did you write to them in just the past few days, or were these guys you were friends with before they got arrested?

So...every jail seems to have a different communication system.  With all, you can send USPS mail, with some you can pseudo-send it through USPS but somehow it goes digitally(?), and with others they have a completely digital system.  I wrote four different guys.  For each they will receive a paper version of the letter at some point, but some got it through the digital system.  I've heard back from one guy, through the digital IM service, but it costs like 10cents per X characters, so he just said, "thanks for letter will write you" or something like that.  Today is his 28th birthday FWIW! 🙂

UPDATE!!!! (and a huge thank you to @IrishBoi)  #NOTSEXPOST

I will attempt to make a long story short, but it isn't my strong suit.

Around Sept 22nd I received written letter back from (let's call him) Travis.  5 pages, really neat and easy to read penmanship.  Before I get to the actual letter, it took longer than expected for him to receive the letter because the site had the wrong DOC# which was why (as I opine above), I was unable to find him in the electronic systems.  That's been solved now.

The letter was really thoughtful, well-written, easy to read, deep.  He shared with e that he has been burned many times attempting correspondence with the people that send it his way because they are either "sexual deviants" or seemed to be "participating in (the pen pal program) because it was something good to do and a box to check."

He was kicked out of his house at 14 because his father suspected he was gay (there was no coming out).  He has siblings that are not allowed to speak to him because when you're from Rural Kentucky, that's what you do I guess.  I won't recap everything.

He shared with me how he's in his third year of college for a double major in Sociology and Psychology and wants to use those degrees to help both foster children (which he became and was treated very poorly) and former inmates (who struggle to acclimate to their post-prison).

I'm a fairly smart person and a god reader and I had to read the 5 pages a few times just to take in all the nuance of it.  He wrote almost a page about the difference between his past, his present, and his future with a bunch of really thoughtful analysis and imagery.

I was freakin' impressed.  Since then, we're now doing things online and his most recent letter came through yesterday (3 pages, typed) which was also really well written to the point I needed to digest it before responding.

HE MAY BE UNIQUE and I may have just gotten lucky, but I have no sense that he's in this for anything other than what he said - establishing a connection and authentic communication with someone in the outside world.  That now seems even more significant given his family has cast him aside for more than half his life.  Perhaps you are looking for someone in thsi type of situation to start engaging with the intent of forming a love relationship.  I don't know.

All I know is my experience has been really rewarding and it's thanks to this thread, on, of all places, Breeding Zone.

I have wanted to reach out to a prison pen pal for many of different reasons I tried before but the site I was taken to wasn't very user friendly at least to me. Anyone point me in a better direction?

I've found a Facebook group, "Gay/Bisexual Inmates Needing Pen Pals", that posts pics and short bios of guys looking to find pen pals. There are other Facebook groups that are similar, I believe.
