Thanks, PozBearWI, for (re)offering this timely article.  Isn't it interesting how that old saw ... "history repeats itself" ... comes to mind?  Let's cross our fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes, that the result of that myopia is not included in the current iteration .....

Yeah, they're trustworthy...

I always find it amazing (well, not really) that reich-wingers are constantly denouncing mainstream news as "untrustworthy" when they're theoretically perfectly capable of researching the facts themselves, from the original sources of the day, and figuring out what happened.

Oh, that's right, none of them paid attention one fucking minute in history classes, because it was BO-RING, and so they never learned HOW to go back to original sources. It's why the South managed to convince white people for a century or more that the Civil War was fought over state's rights and tariffs, not the institution of slavery, despite slavery being prominently mentioned as the issue in every surviving act of secession. Likewise the idea that the Union started the war, even though the record is clear that it started when the confederate armed forces attacked a federal military installation at Fort Sumter. And the record is clear how many of the early battles (which is to say, almost all of them) were fought on Union territory that the confederates invaded.

If someone has concerns that a news story by a Washington Post (or New York Times, or CNN, or whomever) reporter is faulty, then go find the facts. Don't make an ass of yourself screaming "fake news" when you can't actually demonstrate any factual error in the story.

First, if you were away for a while, hope you enjoyed yourself.  I enjoy your input very much - as well as the zingers like the one quoted above.  "Hair Furor" still gives me a chuckle.  

But humor only sharpens, enlivens the crux of the commentary, and yours is always well worth the read.  I don't admire dullards, so I just ignore them.  It seems the louder they holler the less inclined they are to - as  you put it - "go find the facts".

Thanks for sharing how this hits you BootmanLA.  I  on the other hand am frequently amazed by how many people prefer "curation" of the news by some "authority" that likely has an unquestioned and unexplored editorial agenda.  I  used to like "curation" of the news, but now I  prefer to read a diverse set of sources and bounce the imperfections off of each other to see a diversity of opinion on subjects, lest I simply be a good parroter of somebody else's editorial agenda.  It does take a lot more judgement to do this than I  used to need when I  simply placed by faith in an editorial authority, but it seems more realistic to be aware of bias.  It has also become more interesting to me to hear a wide variety of views on subjects than to quibble over sequestered fact bases and be unsatisfied with anything less than an unassailable monopolistic interpretation. I  am definitely one of those who has seen newspapers spin facts and it is hard for me to read what they write without skepticism, certainly without the same amount of skepticism I  apply to any source.  If you have never been burnt, it is understandable that you may not be present to flame.

I  think of you as a formidable debater, but this is a classic example of using a strawman.  There was nothing in rawfuckingonly's remarks that had anything to do with the Civil War.  Yet your remarks generalized about a group of people you conjure into rawfuckingonly's remarks, and then you have a debate with yourself about this cohort, and surprisingly enough, win your own argument.  

I  am definitely a big fan of doing primary research and citing sources, but I  also think we're all entitled to our own opinions, and if you always need to be right and cannot coexist with alternative views...

Your commentary is very appreciated, as you seem to be able to channel a lot of the homos on this site and give voice to the way many of us think.
