Well, it's probably only a legend, but to make sure this doesn't happen (again), the new Pope has to prove he's a biological male in a very hands-on kind of way...

"..... people are more likely to call them Americans rather than .....". As far back as being a Primary School child in Australia, in the 60's, the only Americans we referred to were from the USA. Indigenous were referred to as Native American (USA), Native Chilean or Native Brasilian etc. 

    If being called an "American" is so distasteful then maybe it is time to do what the Netherlands has done, place a stress on the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, CANADA etc.

    This humiliating and bizarre ritual was supposedly a reaction to the ascension of a female pope (Joan, Agnes, John VII, or John VIII depending on source) c.855. Does this ritual still take place?  Felix Haemerlein, De Nobilitate et Rusticitate Dialogus (c.1490)

    It doesn't happen nowadays, and I believe it's controversial whether the practice ever took place at all. The seats with holes in exist, but they are no longer used - why they ever were doesn't seem to be clear. Wikipedia quotes from Jacopo d'Angelo de Scarparia, who was at the coronation of Gregory XII in 1406, who dismisses the idea they were used to verify the Pope's ... as an "insane fable". 

    The Loch Ness Monster, the Yeti, Big Foot, Ghosts, Resurrection are all subjects that have believers & disbelievers & some are extremely fanatical about them but none can actually be proven as fact or fiction & which way a person thinks IS THEIR choice of belief.
