When I was coming of age in New York in the 80's sexual habits were different. I'm speaking from my many many experiences and from porn then and now.  For one thing, you didn't hear sub or submisssive or top or bottom often.  You were French active ( you suck) and Greek passive (you got fucked.) Now those expressions are antiquated. But bottoms aren't just bottoms: now, many are submissive, implying they want aggressive tops. 

And speaking  of tops, they generally didn't hold your head and fuck your throat or gag or choke you.   That seems much more prevalent in the last  25 years or so.  I experience it nearly every time I bottom. In contemporary porn it's almost the norm.  And ass- eating wasn't the norm either.  Now, in RL and porn, nobody gets fucked without being eaten out. I remember one time getting my add eaten in the 80's. I'm not complaining about trend but noticing the way we have sex now is different than it used to be.  At least in my experience.  Does anyone else remember differently?

I’m 47, soon to be 48.  My coming out was in the late 1990s. (or as my nephew recently put it, “during the last century!”)

I remember a few guys presenting a rosebud during fisting parties. And I remember panicking when I saw a guy with a pronounced but relatively small prolapse. But my God, you look around on Twitter and I see hundreds of prolapses every day.

I was Junior in high school when word got around I had a BF. He was a sophomore at the same school. We ere both relatively inexperienced, so nothing too crazy happened sexually. Wish you would have been my first BF back than, my teens would have been less awkward and much more enjoyable. But like I mentioned, I quickly advanced in college.

I’m 72. Came out in ‘72. First saw someone getting fisted when I went to Mineshaft in NYC in ‘81. I was fascinated, but I didn’t notice or learn about prolapse until sometime after 2005. I had a hemhorrhoidectomy in ‘85. ( My smokin’ hot uncle did the surgery so I love saying he’s the first man who got a fist up my ass.) But in the 80’s and 90’s when I was at height of my sexual adventuring, every time someone tried eating my ass, I thought I was having hemorrhoids pop out. So I clenched up so much that no one could get in. When I finally learned about prolapses, that changed. I don’t fist a lot, but I LOVE it. Sad about those missed years.

I started hooking up with guys in college in the late 1980's, and while it was almost exclusively safe sex back then, at least for me I was able to find a lot more ready to fuck piggish hookups. Some of that is geographical, where I live now has been a land of committed sides since long before that term existed, but I do think guys everywhere have become more reluctant to drop trou and fuck with a stranger. I was lucky enough to live places where there was and still seems to be quite a bit of fucking until 2007 and have continued to work all over North America since.

Nope - you pretty much nailed it.  I'd forgotten about the active/passive references - haven't heard that in years now.  But, language is a fluid thing, constantly changing, little by little. 

Per the ass-eating, there were some that did it, but not until bottoms routinely <polite cough> made sure their Holes actually were edible.  Accidents can and do happen, of course, but the cleanliness routine wasn't as obligatory back then.  

I don't think most of us were as comfortable with ourselves back then.  We were still concerned about being "outed" all of that.  M2M sex wasn't as celebrated, it was more in the shadows.  These days, being an "out" gay man is no big deal; back then it was a substantial and bold choice to make.

I lost my anal virginity bareback in 1984. Had sex with 80 men mostly raw and as a bottom 75% of the time until 1987 when I had my  first bf. I became sexually active in the late 70s. I don't remember eating ass was a big thing then. Hardly happened to me at that time. Sucking and fucking were the things to do. Sucking to get him hard and then present your ass for him to fuck. Only a little later I learned more about variety. No drugs except poppers.

The term is recent the problem of guys that won't fuck or get fucked was problem with or without the term. The other trend I dislike is the prevalence of cuddling as the preferred "sexual" activity in cities where "sides" make up the majority. Here in the PNW guys go to the bathhouses looking for cuddle buddies, even though there are events other places for nonsexual cuddling only.

I thought that sides did everything but fucking or any kind of penetration. Do they not do oral, rimming etc too,

Some, but certainly not all of them do oral. Believe it or not there are even guys who fist and/or get fisted but would never consider putting a dick in an ass as well as guys who only penetrate with toys, I'm not really sure they call themselves sides, but they do exist and disrupt the more common gay sexual practices in some bathhouses.
