Tried Getting Prep

Hey, new to this site, and new to hooking up bareback in general.

I've had a boyfriend for two years now and we're both neg. I love this guy a lot and respect his wishes that I play safely outside of the relationship, but I find the idea of recieving strangers' seed so hot. I want to get on  PrEP so I can go to bathhouses/sex clubs/anon hookups and not have to worry about giving my boyfriend HIV.

So, I went to the doctor a few days ago for a few things in addition to the hope of getting on PrEP. I asked my doctor if I could get more information about truvada/PrEP and she asked if I was HIV positive. I told her I didn't believe so, but that I wanted to get on PrEP as a preventative measure. She told me that truvada was one of three HIV medications for HIV positive people, not for people without HIV. She seemed really sure about it and I hadn't really done my research and wanted to know more about it, so I just went along and got tested just in case.

I'm really surprised she didn't know about PrEP, so what should I tell my doctor so I can see if I'm a good candidate for PrEP?

New doctor for sure.  Or go on the CDC website and print out  the brochures and info that clearly states Truvada is approved for use by HIV- individuals to prevent HIV infection.

To me is seems even small town doctors should have gotten word about PrEP via a medical journal, news, etc. so for a doctor to have such a lack of knowledge would make me think twice about continuing to see a provider who clearly does not keep up with the changes in medicine that are beneficial to my health.

x2.

Print it out, show it to her, and make her perscribe it for you, as long as your tests are fine.  There is NO reason she cant give it to you, and dont take "let me refer you to an ID specialist" as an answer.  She can do it.

As others have said, if you can't get a new doctor, you need to print out all the information for her and inform her. This is combination of her not staying on top of new preventive measures on HIV and her pharmaceutical rep not teaching about this new use for Truvada. Or maybe she just doesn't want to listen to anyone???

I have not heard of insurance that only has one option for a doctor!  You may want to double-check that.

Let's be honest.  Gay men (poz or not) have unique medical needs.  Remember, she works for you.  If she is not educating herself to take care of you, FIRE HER.  This is your life and health.

You are listed as being in Los Angeles.  Are there options for a gay health clinic?

If your doctor doesn't know about Prep, she probably doesn't know what test to give you on checking for kidney toxicity, or how to interpret the results.

You should get a different doctor, but in the mean time you will have to educate her with print outs

A new doctor is definitely in order.  Any doctor in LA who is clueless on this subject is a blemish on the profession.  I could maybe understand in some small town in the south, but not in SoCal.
