If it was up to you to set a new age of consent, what would the age be and why?

What age of consent would you choose?

    • No age of consent - just stiffen penalties for rape if victim is under 18

My first gf was 14 . She was totally ready for sex.

In US it's 16-18 depending on the State you live in. What the hell does it matter what State you are in .

Maybe it should be the family doctor who sets the age for each kid. Good for thought there.

Who determines when one is ready for sex?  I believe it is likely there are individuals younger than age of consent laws that are truly emotionally and physically available for sex.   I also believe that for most who were were not ready.  All sorts of beliefs and norms that one grows up with are composed of a broad range of factors.  I've met some otherwise well adjusted individuals where sexual association by an older individual in their youth had no adverse impact on their lives.  I think if initiated by the youth, they're likely ready.  But when we're looking back in time, how can it be proven without a doubt who that person is.  Thus we need the imperfect metric of age.

Age of consent should be whenever the person is able to sign contracts.

This is one I struggle to answer. I "feel" it should be younger then it currently is, but at same time, can't argue that it should be lowered. Which means to me I probably shouldn't be the one to decide.

After the age of 25.

Men's brains are generally considered to be fully developed around the age of 25, as this is when the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for decision-making and impulse control, typically matures. This development continues beyond the teenage years, with different parts of the brain reaching maturity at different rates.

Prefrontal cortex maturation:

This part of the brain, located behind the forehead, is one of the last to fully mature. It plays a key role in planning, prioritizing, and making good decisions.

Timing:

While the brain stops growing in size earlier, its functionality is fine-tuned throughout adolescence and into the 20s. Research indicates that brain maturity generally extends to around age 25.

Implications:

This prolonged development period means that young adults may still be experiencing changes in their decision-making abilities and emotional regulation during their early twenties.

** Based off this information I’d make 25 the recognized age of adulthood and restrict drinking, driving, joining the military, legal decisions/judgements and voting ages, etc. until after an individual reached 25.

That's a data driven, but likely unpopular, as well as unfeasible choice. The economic, social, and political impacts would be staggering.

I respect how you got there and why, it just seems a really tough sell.
