So, virtually everybody’s profile on Grindr says they are on Prep...how is this possible? A local place told me it’s like 1800.00 for a one month prescription...I see 18 and 20 year old dudes on prep...what am I missing? I can’t afford that!

Or or is it just the trendy thing to say now?

I think that some guys are saying they are on PrEP to get raw sex.

I think some guys have health insurance that covers it. I pay $0 out of pocket with the Gilead co-pay assistance. A lot of those youngsters are on their parents insurance still, I bet.

if I was on my parent's insurance, I think i'd be afraid they would find out.  I believe that most health clinics either give prep for free or low cost, but the gilead co pay is great. no one should have to pay to remain safe.  and also, if you think you have been infected the pep has to be free. I am assuming, maybe incorrectly, that it is at almost all health clinics.

I can't speak to the economics of it and who pays, who gets it subsidized, or for free, just from my own talking to guys I've been with who either are on it or claim to be on it. It is expensive, even on insurance. When it first came out I was still back in ATL and they had a program to get sexually active teens and young adults on it to prevent the spread of HIV and were essentially giving it away. Im sure that programs like that are still around, but no idea if there's qualifiers to get into them. Quite a few younger guys are on their parents insurance and get it through that. But I'm finding a lot of younger guys are either seeking out guys on PREP for sex just so they can bare fuck without the risk and are claiming t be on Prep but really aren't. It's become a convenient excuse to ask for bare sex...kind of like how guys say they're neg, recently tested and such. I know a few guys in that 18 to 25 category who aren't really on Prep but claim they are just so they can go raw and some are pretty slutty too. That'll catch up with them sooner or later, but I imagine that a lot of guys are lying about being on PREP.

All of the ACA healthcare plans cover PrEP. Medicare does too. Private, employer based plans are hit or miss. So there has been an increase in the amount of PrEP in use domestically, especially in white populations. We're still a long way from widespread use, though.

I think it's mostly bs in order to get sex. Some could be truthful but it's the internet. People lie all the time on the internet. It's just a judgment call and all at your own risk.

Not necessarily, besides the billing won't say PrEP, it will use the really long pharmacology name of the drug.  They will know you are taking a medication, but nothing will say PrEP usually.  Voice this concern to your doctor or their billing specialist.  Also, if its an outing you are worried about tell them heterosexuals use it too . If you are still on your parents insurance yell them you decided to go on PrEP, because 1 in 6 men are sexually assaulted before they graduate from college.  And you wanted it just in case

Ive worked in outreach before, and I can assure anyone that if you make under 100k USD a year you can find ways to get prep for little or no cost.  Between The ACA, medicare, private insurance, and gilead copay assistance its quite easy to get it for next to nothing.  If all that fails, you can order the generic from India for $60/month.  As for the number of guys lying about it. Id say as long as you are in a metro area, the number of people lying is actually probably quite small.  Any city over a couple hundred thousand people will have a sexual health clinic that is informed about PREP at this point, and its expanding beyond that.  The HIV outbreak in Indiana a couple years ago spurred public health officials to know more about PREP and get people on it if they are at risk.

However, Just like always however the biggest risk groups are going to be in the south and south east where healthcare is the worst; and just like HIV infections are the highest in those areas, I suspect the number of people lying about PREP are the highest in those areas are as well.  Up in Chicago where I live, Everyone I know on it has several bottles laying around.  Hell for myself I think I have about seven new bottles lying around because they fill it about a week early.

Not gonna happen.  HIPPA restrictions mean that if you are over 18 even your parents get no information.  As far is billing and mail is concerned, after the aetna? (not sure which company it was) scandal last year that included HIV information, most companies are eliminating direct health information in mail just to be safge.
