I'll add, to DrScorpio's official response: this isn't, primarily, a hook-up site. It's a discussion forum, and being both (a) international in its reach and (b) fairly esoteric in its subject matter, the odds of finding someone near enough, and willing, to carry out that purpose aren't that promising. It's not out of the question, but I suspect no more than a handful of guys have gotten pozzed from contacts made on this site.

can you share with us what the threshold of participation is and or time as a member? is it possible to offer limited private messages and increase them on a rolling basis the more you participate .

I believe RawTop has addressed this in other postings in this forum about membership levels.

Basically, though, the exact number of postings, time of membership, and so forth - your "engagement", so to speak - needed to advance a level isn't published. That's to keep people from gaming the system.

The whole point of having these limits at first is to ensure that people are coming here to actually engage with the forums. It's a discussion board, not a hookup site. And there was an ongoing problem with outside parties joining up and using private messages for spamming members with, for instance, offers for porn site memberships, pushing to join other sites, and what not.  Since the messages are private - I assume the site manager can view them if need be, but he's not going to be reading them on an ordinary basis - the problem was going undetected unless members reported it.

We already have "limited" private messages that increase the more you participate. They just start at zero. Eventually, you get to the point where you can send a few a day, and then as you keep participating, you can send more and more.

It's not hard to get there. With the thousands of topics here, surely there are many on which you could express an opinion. Read some of the fiction and thank the authors for the stories you like, for instance.

Ah, this makes sense. The entire spam thing is annoying. Now if I can get the “auto warranty department” to stop calling, all will be well.

Can you clarify?

There are limits on how many times junior members can react (like etc) other posts and I'm sure RT has said somewhere what these are. But if you want to react from a computer web browser there's a little white heart in a grey circle in the bottom right corner of each post. Hover your mouse pointer over it and the different ways you can react are displayed horizontally - just click one.

Similar on a mobile device - same little white heart in a grey circle - tap it, and the reactions pop up vertically. Tap one to react.

I'll add: it's my understanding that initially, members cannot "react" (ie Like, upvote, downvote, etc.) posts by others. That restriction goes away after the member has made a certain (non-disclosed) number of posts of his own. My understanding is that this is designed to encourage participation, and it also keeps out, say, someone creating ten fake accounts all to downvote someone who's pissed them off, or whatever. 

But yes, sending messages is *also* a function of how much you've participated in the forums here by making posts and replying with comments to others. You can't send messages initially at all; once you've begun participating, at some point you'll get the opportunity to send a small number of messages a day, and that will increase as you continue to post and comment.

You posted to this forum, so apparently you're not blocked from posting entirely. The info next to your post shows you've made six posts in total, which demonstrates (a) you are indeed able to post and (b) you've only made a very, very few of them, not enough to be granted higher-level privileges.
