Branding

I was told once that a real brand design can not have fully enclosed areas, like a letter O but that it must be open, like the letter C. Otherwise the flesh within the closed design will also die and scar due to lack of blood flow. Is this true? Many cattle brands I've seen seem to follow this rule.
