I've encountered bottoms who are the same ... "safe sex only" in their Grindr/Scruff profiles, but never mention condoms once the sex starts.  My theory is that they're concerned about being "outed" to friends who may know their profiles, so they're using the socially-acceptable response to the safer-sex question.

I always refuse hook ups that want to use a condom, I will not negotiate. I only fuck around with fellas that enjoy the sexual freedom like myself. Tbh it seems like very few gays are actually pro condom. Is it all just an attempt to appease the straights?

This is incorrect. I have got STIs as a top many times from people who were completely asymptomatic (or certainly who appeared to be - I have no way of knowing whether their ass was itching).
