I would hate to see the Ramrod go, I had so many great times there (and in the parking lot, behind the building, etc.)   All things considered, I can't say I'm surprised.

Yeah, I agree that it would be sad if they closed; it's a landmark.  Back in Pig Alley though (there are crude "murals" (I'm being generous here) of a sexual nature), all the tv's showing porn only show guys fucking with condoms.  Some guys started writing a list of the bars that are no more, and there are already too many on the list.  I still go over there occasionally to bask in the former glory - but it's a bit of a sorrow too.  

I don't understand why they (the owners) would go to the bother/expense of putting in that large conduit (maybe for sewer hook-up?) in the vacant lot though.  If they were going to close the bar, peddle the land, why would they go to the expense/bother of having that installed?  

I guess we'll see what happens, when and if it does ..... but all you guys can cross your fingers (and your balls - which counts for even more) that it's only impending improvements to the business, and not the prelude to a Requiem.

I'll say .... unless it's anchored with I-beams deeply into the bedrock, it could hardly be more than 3 stories high.  I haven't gone over there to count, but I don't think any buildings South of 16th St have more than two stories.  

Of note:  exactly one block south (in the 1400 block) of RR is a 2-storie building (adjacent to a formerly a great plumbing store - which has been torn down), that has been available for at least a year now. More, behind both properties is a graveled area that could accommodate dozens and dozens of cars.  Next door is another 2-storey building that has been vacant for about the same time.   Across the street (1300 block), a large parcel of land with a big sign advertising for build-to-suit, that has been there for at least a year.  Both locations have been available, with no takers (or, evidence of takers) for many months.  

In that same (1400) block, on the W side of 4th, there are other empty buildings (with parking) which have been vacant for years.  There are also empty commercial buildings across the street from RR.  Having been in business myself for many years, one of the responses above doesn't make much business-sense, at least to me, particularly given the available buildings (or sites available for new construction) currently available.  So why would some enterprising construction company put up a new  building, when so many existing buildings in the immediate area are available?  Most particularly, right next door to a fantastically infamous gay bar - unless, of course, there were some kind of connection?  

Now.  Given certain info proposed above, I have some homework to do before committing anything more to our little (yet public) corner of the world.

Turns out you're right.

So, there's a tall hurricane fence with a banner on it describing what's taking place.  

There are shipping containers across the property, (N/S) from the closest to the back property line as possible to about 12, 15" south of the RR building.  They have vertical portions of the walls removed, which will become floor-to-ceiling windows (apparently).  Between the shipping containers and the RR building, there is space enough left to construct a two storey entry-hall, apparently all glass (I'm assuming there's a bit of artistic license involved).  In front of this conglomeration is a parking area.  The entire project appears to take up all of the empty lot in between RR and Decades, the used-furniture store on the corner.  

Currently, RR is back to it's old ways, in celebration of the storied years of business catering to some of the finest men on Earth.  However, it's only the postlude to the final hurrah, which may take place in June.  Went over for a beer, as I sometimes do before heading over to Slammer.  Last night it was like the old nights of debauchery - I never did get to Slammer.  

So, all you guys that can, get over there for a couple of last nights:  as someone once said: "everything changes at some point".  The prelude to the Requiem is already wafting through the evening breezes.  

There are a lot of guys who bought homes in the area over the years, for exactly the same reason: proximity to RamRod.  I just hope that not all of them ditch too.  Housing prices have been through the roof around here, but the retrenchment has already begun.  Not much selling above 5.50 K anymore, and most right around 5.

I miss the Cubby Hole too - used to stop in there fairly often for a bite of lunch (and dessert around the end of the bar- or the john).  

I guess there's only one thing that's guaranteed in life .... which is that everything changes over the years.  I've been to the Eagle a few times, but it's just not steeped in the moral rot that's soaked into every inch of RR.   I guess we better get busy up there at the Eagle, but it's almost summer (mid-80's today), and wearing much gear is downright uncomfortably hot.

 But, so far there's always Slammer 😉 

oh - latest rumor is RR will close in June.  I still think that we should buy Decades, get rid of all that furniture, board up the windows, and turn it into a "Slammer-ette" ....

Definitely, as well as the everlasting Clubhouse II. 

BTW, did you make it to the Slammer's anniversary? I did drop my souvenir towel somewhere but held on to the memories.
