I do think religion, or a conservative upbringing in general, has a lot to do with it.  I had a friend who was an ordained minister.  He worked for a religious organization which wasn't gay friendly.  His specific role wasn't ministerial and he didn't try to hide things.  But he had a thing for guys who were religious (Ultra Orthodox Jews, otherwise observant Muslims, Mormon missionaries, etc.)  Obviously, it was tough for him to meet guys in those rather insular circles but I think that was part of the appeal for him.  Yeah, a shrink would have had a field day with him but what does it matter?

I think it's a more primal instinct from tribal days when privacy wasn't a thing. You would always watch and hear your fellow tribe members procreating usually next to the fire to keep warm.
