Two days ago I woke up with pain in random joints in my body- left hip, right elbow, right knee and the worst one- the right ankle and right foot, making walking very painful. The pain has persisted for the two days. Though I'm not trying to jump to any conclusions, based on the research that I've done, I have a strong feeling this joint pain is coming from the tenofovir component of the Stribild I am taking. I have had no effects from Stribild yet, but I think this may be it poking its ugly head out at me. I tried calling my doctor today to get his opinion, but I haven't heard back from him yet. I know tenofovir is a common component in many ARV's, I wonder if any other guys have experienced joint pain from their ARVs. If so... - What was your experience with it? - Did it come and go, or did it become a chronic problem? - How did you combat it? - Any advice anyone can share from their doctor? I work as a bartender and need to constantly be on my feet, so if this joint pain in my foot persists, I'm going to be miserable at work. Hopefully there are some answers that may help me combat it.

It's interesting how in spite of you coming out, your parents no longer see you as good enough to be on their insurance, eat in their home or help you financially, yet you are still good enough to them to be a tax allowance. I've seen people pull some loophole shit in my days as a banker, but from a familial point of view, that's just fucked up. If I were you, I would try to put a little distance between you and them as in get out from under their roof. If you want, PM me and let me know what area in NJ you are in. I do some real estate business on the side with my father and though most of what we do is in New York City, I do have contacts in northern and central NJ as far as real estate agents go. If you're looking for your own place, even just a cheap rental of some sort (studio, 1br, etc), I'm sure I can help you out. Also, seaguy, to answer your question (as I have had years of experience being a waiter/bartender in NJ), the minimum wage for tipped employees here in NJ is $2.13/hour. It's total bullshit. Taxes on the tips we declare (or are supposed to declare) eat right through that $2.13, so most people who earn that wage never see a dime of it and even end up owing money to federal taxes in April every year. Depending on the restaurant a person works at, tips can range from shitty to freaking awesome. I usually pull an average of $20-25+/hour cash bartending, so it's great as a side job and can even be a liveable wage for someone who does it as their only job. -
Ha, that is interesting and I didn't know that. I knew that there were alternatives to penicillin allergic patients, I just didn't know it was doxycycline. I am going to pick up the doxycycline tonight at my nearby 24 hour CVS. I just want to knock out this infection, it's starting to get painful. Who knew a single hair follicle could cause so much shit?

This entire syph scare (though I wouldn't say I was actually "scared") has finally come to a conclusion. Last week, when I went for my routine blood draw, my doctor ordered a blood sample for a syphilis RPR test. He inspected the area around the sore that I had and he wasn't too sure what to make of it. He said it resembled a syph chancre, but he wasn't sure if it was. He felt around the area and noted that my lymph nodes in the groin area by my left leg were swollen. He said that's usually not how a syph infection would manifest itself, in a localized area like that. He suspected it may be folliculitis. My doctor called me this afternoon. The syphilis test came back negative. My doctor firmly believes that if it's not syphilis, it must be folliculitis that just got ugly. That was my initial thought too but coincidentally had this syph exposure on my mind with it. The doctor ordered me a script of doxycycline to clear it up. I'm glad the whole thing is finally over.

If you don't know about PrEP, I would say now would be a very good time to start looking into it before you start chasing any bugs. -

No worries, I'm not prepared to quit tomorrow either. I'll skip on the patches though. Tried them in the past in addition to the gum, all of which did nothing for me. Cold turkey is the way for me. -

I still don't think the medicine nowadays is a good enough justification to want to become poz. Is the medicine good? From my experience, yeah it's great. I take one Stribild pill every morning and have no side effects. My first blood draw will probably yield low or undetectable results. Would I rather live a life of NOT having to take a pill every morning? Yeah man, I would. And what about long term effects of the pills? The one a day regiments haven't been out long enough to know what long term damage they may or may not do to the body. I try not to think about it, but I hope I never have to find out. I hope there is a functional cure or an even cleaner drug out before I may have to find out. See the questions we poz guys have to ask ourselves? Ask yourself if you want to be asking yourself these questions in your future. -

No judgments on you at all man, but I think you are making a big mistake. With PrEP available (and there are programs that you can get it without insurance), there should be no need for you to be afraid. You sound like a perfect candidate for it. 8 months ago, the uptake on PrEP had finally gotten to me and I was going to explore into getting it. Unfortunately, one month later, I had tested poz. I was too late for PrEP. You have no insurance. That means you will have to go on ADAP to get HIV drugs should you turn poz. Sure it's do-able and sure, you can live a regular lifespan under HIV drugs, but do you really want to deal with that hassle? Do you really want to deal with the stigma? You're 20. You have a long life ahead of you. Do you want to look at the rest of your life as having to take a pill everyday and go to a doctor ever three months? That's HIV at its best man. At it's worse, it can be bad reactions to the drugs, drug resistant strains, failing treatment that leads to having AIDS. Sure many gay men live good and comfortable lives while being poz, but do you want to have to look at both sides of this coin and wonder what your life will be like? I ask you this- aside from loving bareback sex and not wanting to be afraid anymore, is there any other underlying reason why you would want to become poz? -
Hole was "prelubed" with another top's cum.

It's possible that he might have thought you would not want to fuck him if he had a load in him. I've hooked up with tops who have likenesses on both sides of the equation. I know one particular guy who won't fuck me unless I have two or three loads in me. Then I know another guy who wants my hole fresh and untouched the day I meet with him. Then of course there are the seeming majority of guys in between, who appreciate a freshly loaded butt, however, don't necessarily require it. -

Tiger, I'll make a deal with you.... Pick a date you want to quit smoking and I'll join you. We'll see how far each other can get without caving and hopefully neither of us do. We're in the same boat. Let me know man. -

First Time HIV Check-Up
VersatileBreeder replied to VersatileBreeder's topic in HIV/AIDS & Sexual Health Issues
Hey wood, thanks man, we'll see how it goes this week. I wish I can say yes, I did quit smoking but I have not yet. I am working on it though. Spoke to the doc about possibly getting on Chantix. It's definitely becoming more and more of a must that I need to quit, the doctor also ran some breathing tests on me and he believes it's causing me to have asthma. So definitely in progress. My plan is to be cig free by the end of the summer. -

First Time HIV Check-Up

At this point, I just want to see a significant downward trajectory in the viral load and upwards of CD4. Undetectable would be great, but if the doctor tells me I went down to let's say 500, 1000 or even 2000 viral load from 70,000, I would see that as a success. My CD4 was 700 last test so as long as I'm still at least that, that would be great. Results should be in this week. -
Hey guys. Yesterday I went to my ID doc for my first blood draw to test the med's progress. Doctor said "hopefully this will be the test where we see the virus suppressed to undetectable levels, or at least very low." They drew right vials of blood and I should have results next week. I don't know why, but I'm so nervous about getting these test results. I've been on Stribild for about 7 weeks now and have had perfect adherence. Haven't missed a day and always take it within an hour or two of 10 AM. I just have this bad nervousness that the doctor may call me back with bad news- viral load not down, CD4 not up, etc. I know I probably shouldn't have these fears but for some reason they're hanging over me. Has anyone had similar experience when going for their first check up? Are these fears irrational?

Asymptomatic responsibility
VersatileBreeder replied to Verbal76's topic in HIV/AIDS & Sexual Health Issues
I have to agree with rawfuckr here... It sounds like you need a new doctor. Trying to test by swabbing for discharge is archaic. That's why there are urine tests to test for it. A few years back, I had a situation very similar to yours. I was with a girl who called me and claimed she had chlamydia and it had to have been from me. I kinda called bullshit on her because 1) she had a reputation for sleeping around and 2) I had no symptoms at all, but I was now insecure about it. I went to a doctor late on a Friday afternoon and they weren't testing anymore that day. The doctor could see that I was anxious and didn't want to wait until the following week. She prescribed me the standard week regimen antibiotic for chlamydia and told me to just take it anyway, it wouldn't hurt me. But there's no reason why your doctor couldn't order a standard urine test for chlamydia and gono. I'd recommend at this point just going to another doctor or a regular STD clinic. -
I wouldn't get too down about it dude. Versatile here, and same thing has happened to me a small handful of times as a top. Though there is no way to answer your question about what is "wrong" with you over the internet, it may be worth considering the following things... What was different about the times you met with these guys? Did you feel nervous/anxious for any reason? Were you tired? Had you cum already those days you met? It's natural to be afraid erectile dysfunction is the culprit, but if you don't think it is or you feel you're not at that age yet, it can be any other factor that just put your dick into non-performance mode. Also, I'm noticing some bottoms on this thread commenting that when it comes time for them to get fucked, they expect full performance from the top and can't understand why they wouldn't get hard. My only response to that is, shit happens. No hook up is ever going to be perfect. As a top, I've had a few experiences where the hook up didn't work out because the bottom couldn't function properly. As in perhaps they weren't as cleaned out as they thought they were. Or they start taking my dick and they complain that their hole is too tight and they can't handle my dick that day, etc. So moral of the story- top or bottom, sometimes we just have our off days. Happens to the best of us. Forget about it and just move on.

drscorpio, I feel stupid- I DID know that the reason the Herxheimer effect took place was because of the dying spirochetes letting out toxins into the blood... I just completely forgot to piece together the fact that you'd have to actually have syphilis for that to happen if you got shot with penicillin! DUH! I think I am going to try to reschedule my doctor appointment for early next week before I go on vacation. I am hoping I can get in to see him. I will have him take a look at this sore and despite having a negative test, maybe he will give me the penicillin shot before going on vacation just to get it out of the way. Either way though, whether I get it treated early next week or in three weeks, it shouldn't make a difference as to the stage of the disease. If my blood draw from last week couldn't produce a positive result yet and it actually is syph, then it should still be primary stage, not a blown-out secondary, so if it is, any effect of the shot I would hope would be minor.

Yeah, kazore, the reason I mentioned it may be something in the way of an ingrown hair or something of the sort is because it was originally a big red bump with a hair growing directly out of the center of it. When I pulled the hair out (which was painful), there was a perfect hole left right where the hair was plucked and it bled a bit. Now, two weeks later, I will wake up in the morning and there will be a bit of pus coming out of it. It started looking like a syph chancre shortly after I plucked the hair, but with this recent neg test, I just don't know. Like I said, I'm not panicking. I'm just going crazy because I want to know what this is and I can't figure it out. In a way now, I almost wish the test WAS positive for syphilis because then I would know what the problem was and how to fix it.
-
totalasspig, that's not a bad idea to be proactive and if it were just a week of pills, I would probably do it. I'm not scared of needles and I have a high threshold for pain, but I did hear that when the penicillin shot is injected, there's the possibility of that Herxheimer effect and that it's a bitch. I also heard that HIV+ are at a higher risk of having it. I'd rather not go through all that riff raft if it's not really syphilis. Like I said, if it is syphilis, I'm not worried. I'm not gonna freak out or panic. I'm just gonna take care of it. It would be NICE if it wasn't and this sore is related to something else more minor (like an infected follicle), so that I can get a break from going through all the bullshit with the shots and all. But I'm not panicking if it is.

Rayne, correction from my initial post... It wasn't my actual doctor who called me with the results, it was another doctor from his office as he is on vacation this week. If it were my doctor who called me, I would have asked him, but I did not want to start a whole new thing with a different doctor.
-
rawfuckr, it's interesting... The sources I have found about syphilis show me great big differences in expectations of when the chancre shows and when the testing should show as accurate. They say that the chancre will usually show 3 weeks post infection, but can also show up to 90 days. Then most sources say that 5-6 weeks should be accurate for a test, but like you said, could take up to 90 days. My exposure was April 12. My blood was drawn June 10, so it was over 8 weeks. According to these sources, it would be very unusual for the chancre to have shown this late as well as for the test to produce a false negative this late. I'm going to ask my doc what he thinks I should do as far as re-testing.

JD- Nope, nothing. It doesn't feel like anything when I leave it alone. From what I know, herpes is insanely painful and/or itchy. This thing is only a bother if it's touched. What is messing with me is if it were an infected hair follicle, I would have thought it would have cleared up by now, but again, I'm no doctor, I could be wrong.
